History and mission

The Hunthausen Activity Center was named in honor of Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen—a Carroll student, professor, coach, and president who taught the importance of tending mind, body, and spirit. Its mission is to “provide the Carroll community with diverse programming to engage the mind, body, and spirit and bring joy and balance to our lives.

A Space for All

As a part of the MIND BODY SPIRIT Campaign, the Hunthausen Activity Center was intentionally designed to provide diverse programming to enhance the health and wellness goals of the Carroll community and helps impart a healthy balance to students’ lives through physical activity and recreational fellowship. It now serves as a dedicated space for the general student body who seek opportunities to work out, recreate, and recharge in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The HAC ensures that students who are not part of athletic teams can enjoy recreational and fitness activities without competing for time or space with varsity athletic programs. This core principle guides the use and scheduling of the facility.

To uphold the mission:

  • Priority is given to open recreation, drop-in fitness, and wellness activities that benefit the broader Carroll College community.
  • Campus Recreation staff carefully manage space reservations to maintain access for individuals and groups not affiliated with varsity athletics.
  • Varsity athletic team practices are not permitted in the HAC during regular operating hours, unless specifically approved and limited in scope.
  • By keeping this space accessible and student-centered, the Hunthausen Activity Center fosters a balanced, inclusive, and vibrant campus life.
