Spring Break Beppu-Style

Carroll College has been hosting ten Japanese students and one teaching assistant from Beppu, Japan, for two weeks of intensive English language studies.

As part of their visit, they observed the Montana Legislature and met with Lt. Governor Angela McLean followed by a visit to Boeing. They also spent a day in Great Falls visiting the Charlie Russell Museum and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

Carroll has partnered with Asia-Pacific University in Beppu, Japan, to create this ACCESS program. These students participate in two classes each day along with cultural experiences throughout their stay, including dinners provided by the Helena community during their first week in Helena, time spent with Carroll students, and excursions to local museums, historical sites and more.

One of the students, Marina Suda, from Gumma, Japan, intends to pursue international relations in college. A highlight of the trip for her was the visit with the Lt. Governor. She was particularly impressed that a government official of Ms. McLean's status would take time to meet with the students. Marina said she took to heart the message the Lt. Governor shared, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” She has also enjoyed the evening meals with various host families from the Helena community and is awestruck by the vast amount of stars one can see in the Montana night sky.

Marina says she would one day like to return to Montana as a tutor and will highly recommend this experience to others at Asia-Pacific University.

Safe travels home to our new friends from Beppu!

The students spent time visiting with Lt. Governor Angela McLean at the Capitol

The students take time out of their tour of the Capitol to pose with the statue of Mike & Maureen Mansfield and on the interior steps.

End of an Era

On March 9, Carroll Vice President of Facilities and Community Relations, Tom McCarvel, made the difficult announcement that the Carroll indoor swimming pool is being closed permanently.

Recent assessments of the pool facility found that the walls and roof of the building housing the pool do not meet current building codes and could pose a significant safety risk given a seismic event. After evaluating the costs associated with reinforcing the structure, replacing the aging pool, and taking into consideration the historical use by the college student body, it was determined that it was economically unfeasible to keep the pool operational. The official decision to permanently close the pool was made by our Board of Trustees at their meeting on February 27.

Carroll has maintained the pool as a community resource for over 44 years. As a campus, we are saddened to see it go but remain hopeful that Helena can work together to find an alternative solution for a community pool.

We hope to see you for a night of fellowship, fun, and entertainment!

Tomorrow Made Possible

This past week, Carroll students were enlightened about the impact donors have on their education through the student philanthropy education program Tomorrow Made Possible.

Through program materials, students could see the number of donors who contribute to their experience along with personal testimonials by donors on why they think it is important to support our students. Flags were hung in the Campus Center each representing a donor that has made a gift to Carroll this year as well as posters featuring donors explaining why they have decided to give financially to the college and our students.

If you would like to make a gift to support Carroll students, please visit www.carroll.edu/giving. If you are a donor and would like to share why you contribute to Carroll, please send your story to kdold@carroll.edu.

Students at Carroll are grateful to the donors for their generous support that makes their tomorrows possible.

Story Correction

We have a correction to the Presidential Honors story which was published in the March 6 QuickNotes. At the President’s Dinner, held on February 27, James A. Grenier was conferred an honorary degree not a doctorate. We apologize for the error.

Faculty/Staff News

Summer in D.C.

Dr. Brian Matz, associate professor in the theology department and the Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen Professor of Peace and Justice, was recently awarded a Summer Fellowship at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington D.C. Dumbarton Oaks is a research library on Byzantine history owned by Harvard University.

Due to the nature of the research center's vast collections on Byzantine history, including a large collection of material gathered from archaeological digs, and because access to this library is tightly controlled, the fellowships are the only avenue to use the facility. Consequently, these are highly competitive fellowships.

The fellowship will enable him to finish work on his book of translated texts from the filioque controversy in the ninth century. Congratulations to Dr. Matz on securing this highly coveted fellowship.

Dr. Matz is currently on sabbatical for the spring semester serving as the Patricia H.Imbesi Fellow at Villanova University.
