A Rewarding Evening

Janel Keating, MA, '86

Terri Temple, RN, '79

Carroll’s signature events for this year’s Founder’s Day weekend include the Founder’s Day Dinner and Academic Achievement Lecture.

The highlight of the Founders Day Dinner is the opportunity to formally recognize and honor Carroll’s exceptional alumni through the presentation of the Alumni Academic Achievement Award and the Alumni Hall of Fame Award.

The 2013 Alumni Academic Achievement Award will be presented to Janel Keating, MA, (’86), superintendent of the White River School District in Buckley, Wash. Janel has been recognized nationally for her work creating collaborative culture within school environments with an intense focus on clarifying what each student must learn, monitoring each student’s learning, providing systemic interventions, and enrichment for students who master learning standards. She has co-authored several books and written numerous articles on leadership and school improvement.

Ms. Keating will also be presenting the  Alumni Academic Achievement Award lecture - Is it good enough for my child: Closing the knowing-doing gap on Monday, November 4 at 7 p.m.

The Alumni Academic Achievement Award is given to Carroll College alumni who have distinguished themselves academically or artistically. The awardees are accomplished in their chosen field as evidenced by publications, research or honors.

Terri (Troupe) Temple, RN (’79), will be the 2013 inductee into the Alumni Hall of Fame. Terri works in post-anesthesia recovery at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, Mont. She has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, a testament to the quality of care she provides for patients and their families, and she volunteers her time to provide grief support for those who experience the death of a newborn. For over 30 years, Terri has mentored Carroll nursing students, teaching them how to blend the skills and values learned in Carroll’s nursing program to provide extraordinary patient care in the course of their own careers.

The Alumni Hall of Fame Award honors alumni who have given outstanding contributions of time, talent and treasure in distinguished service to his or her community or Carroll College. Eligible alumni include those Carroll alumni who have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours, faculty members—past or present, or honorary degree recipients.

Congratulations to these two outstanding Carroll alumni – we are proud to call you Saints.

Party It Up With the Parents

Carroll has a full slate of activities planned for Parents’ Weekend.

Begin with the All Saints Day Mass at the St. Charles Chapel, Friday at 4 p.m. followed by a dedication of Fr. Gene Peoples Lobby in the St. Charles Hall lobby. After the dedication, join the Parents registration and reception in the Fortin Science Center Scola.  You have a variety of choices from there – take in a Fighting Saints volleyball game at the PE Center; be entertained by Mimeprov, Carroll’s own improvisational group; and cap off the evening with a Swing Dance for parents and students hosted by the Carroll College Swing Club.

Start your day on Saturday with Mass at the Grotto followed with a brunch in the lower Campus Center. Cheer on the Saints at our home football game in Nelson Stadium and then enjoy some good hearted competition at the Founders Day Flurry Race. From there choose between joining us at the Founders Day Dinner, checking out Helena’s dining scene, or catching either the men’s or women’s basketball games at the PE Center.  Close out your day listening to Dan Hunthausen and the Train Wrecks in the Upper Campus Center.   More information is available online.

Reehl Scary Stuff

In a twist of wickedly executed timing, Carroll math grad Sarah Reehl (’13) is featured in a Scientific American blog post entitled "Zombie Fever: A Mathematician Studies a Pop Culture Epidemic"

Reehl, who is currently a mathematics graduate student at Utah State University, was intrigued by the prevalence of zombie fever in popular culture and subsequently used the undead as the basis of her undergraduate thesis.  In her thesis, Reehl used a standard epidemiological model to study not only seasonal influenza rates but also our culture’s obsession with zombies.  By using the word “zombie” in place of people as the population in question, she was able to model the zombie trend through Google’s Ngram viewer as if it were an infectious disease.

So how long will zombies be haunting mainstream society?  According to Reehl, it will be a slow, slow demise with the undead not dying until after 2080.

Carl O’Loughlin (’80) has been promoted to loss mitigation officer at American Federal Savings Bank. O'Loughlin holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Carroll College. O’Loughlin is involved in numerous charitable activities with the charity closest to his heart being Kindness Makes Miracles, a program for students, fifth through eighth grade. Kindness Makes Miracles is an anti-bullying program created as a legacy to his daughter, Kelly.
