Institutional Animal Care and Use

Overview

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a standing committee at Carroll College that oversees the College’s animal care and use program. The Committee's composition and responsibilities regarding animal research are mandated by the Animal Welfare Act (Public Law 99-198). The committee ensures the appropriate care, use and humane treatment of animals used for research, testing and teaching. The responsibilities of the IACUC include reviewing and approving requests to use live vertebrate animals, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, and investigating animal welfare concerns. The IACUC performs inspections of all areas where animals are housed and used. The IACUC serves as a resource to investigators, research staff, students and administrators, by providing guidance in planning and conducting research.

Committe Composition

By federal policy, the IACUC must be composed of, at a minimum, five members. The membership requirement is:

The IACUC membership must consist of at least 5 members and includes:

  1. one veterinarian;
  2. one practicing scientist experienced in research with animals;
  3. one member whose primary concerns are in a nonscientific area; and
  4. one member who is not affiliated with the institution other than as a member of the IACUC.
