Carroll College is proud to announce that Lara Thomas, Financial Aid Coordinator, has been named the Montana Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA) Financial Aid Professional of the Year.

This award recognizes a financial aid professional whose contributions often go unnoticed but are essential to supporting students, families, and the broader financial aid community across Montana.

Thomas has been a valued member of Carroll College’s Financial Aid Office for the past ten years, bringing extensive experience from both the lending industry and higher education. Her comprehensive knowledge of student loans and scholarships enables her to effectively guide students and families through even the most complex financial challenges.

As a frontline representative of the office, Thomas approaches every interaction with empathy, professionalism, and individualized care. She takes the time to understand each student’s and family’s unique circumstances, building meaningful relationships based on trust. Many families specifically request to meet with her, often choosing to wait for the opportunity to speak with her directly.

In her nomination, Janet Riis of Carroll College wrote, “Nearly every visiting family has the opportunity to connect with her, and I frequently hear at admissions events, ‘We spoke with Lara—she was wonderful, so helpful, and shared information we didn’t even know to ask about. She’s a fun one to talk to!’ She is truly a welcoming and reassuring presence for our office.”

In addition to her role in financial aid, Thomas is actively engaged across campus. She teaches a popular “Guns, Gutz and Butts” fitness class at the Hunthausen Activity Center, building connections with students that help foster comfort and trust when seeking support from the Financial Aid Office.

Riis also noted, “Her experience, expertise, compassion, and consistent willingness to serve make her an exceptional team member. Above all, she is a kind and dedicated professional with a positive outlook and a great sense of humor. I am grateful to work alongside her each day and look forward to many more years of collaboration.”

As part of the award, Thomas will receive a plaque and may be eligible for up to a $1,000 professional development grant.

Carroll College congratulates Lara Thomas on this well-deserved honor and celebrates the meaningful impact she continues to make for students and families.
