Alumni News

Maybe it was Something in the Water?

Mike Flinn (class of 1956), Jim Grenier (class of 1955) and Ed Jasmin (class of 1956) recently enjoyed a reunion at a Carroll alumni gathering in Phoenix, AZ.

The three Carroll alumni share a unique bond by virtue of their similar history.  The childhood friends were born within nine days of each other eighty years ago (Dec. 1933) in Helena’s old St. John’s Hospital and, before Carroll, attended Helena’s St. Helena Grade School and Cathedral High School together. They each also served as trustees of Carroll College. (And another shared coincidence – 2 of the 3 have wives named Doris!)

J. Michael (Mike) Flinn serves as President of Flinn Investments and spends time between Seattle, WA and Scottsdale, AZ. Ed Jasmin (class of 1956), former President of Norwest Bank, is now retired in Helena. Jim Grenier (class of 1955) is retired in Scottsdale, AZ and was formerly VP of Intel.

Happy 80th to three fine lads from Helena!

Faculty/Staff News

A Glaes Goodbye

After careful reflection and much consideration, professor Gillian Glaes has decided to leave her position as the modern European historian at Carroll at the end of the spring semester. She will move to Missoula in May to join her husband and to pursue new opportunities.

She has treasured her eight years at Carroll, where she worked together with her colleagues to globalize the history department's curriculum, to create the faculty accomplishments brochure through the Faculty Development Committee, to bring in internationally-known guest speakers, and, together with Charlotte Jones, to continue Sister Annette Moran's vision for the faculty colloquium.

She also maintained an active scholarly agenda, publishing several peer-reviewed articles and presenting at conferences nationally and internationally. In 2011, she became a Fulbright scholar.

Most importantly, though, she worked hard every day to provide the best possible education for Carroll's students in and beyond the classroom. Teaching highlights included working on two interdisciplinary learning courses (ILCs) with her colleagues, Dr. Chris Fuller (theology) and Dr. Elvira Roncalli (philosophy), which covered the history and theology of the Holocaust and twentieth-century ideologies, respectively.

Please join the Carroll family in thanking Gillian for her good work at Carroll and in wishing her well in her future adventures.  You will be missed!

The Faculty Development Committee administers the Jerry Berberet Summer Research and Writing Grants, named for and supported by Carroll alumnus, historian, and former Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jerry Berberet.  Three grants of $1,500 are awarded on a competitive basis each spring semester to faculty members who submit high quality proposals outlining their project and funding needs.

Hall Pass

In order to maintain and improve the level of faculty scholarship, Carroll College allows faculty to apply for a one-class reduction in their teaching schedule for one semester. This course-release program is designed to help faculty members pursue scholarship such as research, writing, and/or creative work.

The Faculty Development Committee recently selected Eric Hall in the Theology department as the recipient of a course release for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Eric will use the time to work on two projects. One project is a revision of his dissertation on the concept of authenticity into a book manuscript and the second is to work on a book manuscript on Harry G. Frankfurt.
