Jumpstart to College: Freshman Research Experience in Chemistry

FY Chemistry Experience Collage

Carroll College launched a brand-new program this summer designed to welcome incoming students with curiosity, community, and hands-on discovery. The Freshman Research Experience in Chemistry (FREC), spearheaded by Dr. John Rowley, associate professor of chemistry, brought together nine incoming biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and chemistry majors for a four-day pre-orientation camp that blended outdoor adventure with real-world science.

FREC gave students an early start to life at Carroll. Over the course of four days, they floated the Missouri River, collected and analyzed water samples, and engaged in enrichment workshops while building friendships with peers and professors. One participant described it as “an extremely enjoyable camp that gives you a head start in college life. It allows you to connect with your new friends, explore local recreational experiences, and connect with your professors.” Another added, “It’s a chemistry-based camp that is really fun and honestly a great way to make friends early.”

At the heart of the program was an open-ended research project on algal blooms in Montana waterways. After collecting water samples from lakes and rivers, students conducted experiments by spiking samples with nitrogen and phosphorus to explore conditions that promote algal growth. One participant said, “The experience with the algae blooms went really well, and I had a lot of fun.” Others highlighted how much they valued the use of professional equipment, the clear explanations, and the well-structured learning process. The research will continue into the semester through Carroll’s CH 101 general chemistry laboratory, providing a strong link between the summer experience and academic coursework.

Students praised the balance between science and outdoor recreation, with the Missouri River float being a highlight for many. One called it “really good for bonding,” while another noted, “The counselors were helpful and super encouraging. I was able to work with peers extremely well because of how the labs were formatted.” They also spoke highly of Dr. Rowley’s leadership, describing him as “astounding” in how he taught and appreciated that the program was fun, free-flowing, and well-organized without being overwhelming.

By the end of camp, participants had not only gained a deeper understanding of chemistry but also built a support network of friends and mentors to carry into the start of the semester. As one student explained, “It’s a jumpstart to college life. A great way to take a peek into what kind of stuff you may cover in a college class. An awesome opportunity to make some friends that you can go into the overwhelming start of college with.” Another summed it up simply: “FREC is a fun way to get introduced to the science we will be doing in college as well as a great way to make new friends.”

The success of the inaugural FREC highlights Carroll’s commitment to blending academics, adventure, and community. By giving students a chance to engage with faculty, explore Montana’s natural beauty, and dive into meaningful research before classes even begin, FREC sets the tone for a transformative college experience.
