Ed Glowienka, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Philosophy at Carroll College, has recently presented new research at an international conference and published an article in a leading philosophy journal. His work uses the history of philosophy to address contemporary ethical questions, an approach that reflects a core strength of Carroll’s philosophy department.
In September 2025, Dr. Glowienka presented a paper at Rethinking the Practice of Thinking in the Era of Artificial Intelligence, an international conference hosted by the University of Beira Interior in Covilhã, Portugal. The conference brought together scholars from around the world to examine how artificial intelligence is affecting human thinking, ethics, and society.
Glowienka’s paper, “AI, Phronesis, and the Emulation Problem,” draws on Aristotle’s concept of phronesis, or practical wisdom, to examine how the use of AI may influence the development of moral reasoning, particularly among young people. Rather than focusing on whether AI can replicate human intelligence, the paper considers how reliance on AI tools may shape human judgment and ethical decision-making.
Glowienka has also recently published an article titled “Leibniz on Justice for Future Generations” in Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie. The article examines the work of seventeenth-century philosopher G.W. Leibniz in relation to current debates about intergenerational ethics and moral responsibility to future generations.
Together, these projects demonstrate how Carroll’s philosophy faculty apply historical philosophical frameworks to modern ethical issues, including emerging technologies and long-term social responsibility.
