Carroll Theatre Presents Seussical: The Musical

Seussical the Musical

HELENA – The Carroll College Theatre Department is delighted to present Seussical: The Musical! TYA version by Tony-winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, as their annual Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) production. Seussical: The Musical! will be presented in the FLEX Theatre, located in the lower level of the Carroll College Campus Center, April 12-28.

With a 75-minute runtime, this musical follows some of the most famous Dr. Seuss characters and features many of the songs from the full length Broadway hit. The Cat in the Hat takes on a journey with Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust inhabited by Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton soon faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. He encounters many other beloved Dr. Seuss characters along the way!

In addition to the regular evening and matinee performances, a special part of the spring production is the daytime shows Carroll Theatre actors perform just for area students. This year we are looking forward to welcoming 1,040 early childhood and elementary students to Carroll College to experience live theater! For several of these children, it might be their first experience with live theater. The energy and joy they bring to an audience is palpable. Brooke McClenning, who plays the Cat in the Hat noted that performing for children is a special experience for actors too, “Seeing their faces light up…and welcoming them to a world of freedom, possibility and imagination!”

Another magical part of this particular production is the presence of a Live Pit Orchestra! The Carroll Instrument Ensemble, under the direction of Rebecca Kagerer brings an exciting element to this show. We can't even remember the last time a pit orchestra was used in a Carroll production, if ever! The vocal direction was expertly handled by the Choirmaster this semester, Tascha Anderson Grey. This production is a celebration of the Fine Arts here at Carroll.

As Lexi Larson, who plays Jojo, remembers being "that wide-eyed kid in the audience, getting lost in a world of magic!" Carroll Theatre invites you to bring a child, or maybe just your inner child, and join us for this celebration of Seuss!
