HELENA, MT— Carroll College is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. William N. Ruud as its 19th president, effective July 1, 2025. Chosen unanimously by the Presidential Search Committee following a comprehensive seven-month national search, Dr. Ruud emerged as the clear choice of trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and community members dedicated to advancing Carroll’s mission.
Dr. Ruud brings 17 years of experience as a college and university president, having served at Marietta College in Ohio (2016–2023), the University of Northern Iowa (2013–2016), and Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania (2007–2013). Throughout his career, he has led institutions through pivotal periods of growth, revitalization, and challenge—developing integrated strategic plans, reversing enrollment declines, exceeding ambitious fundraising goals, and enhancing academic offerings that reflect both institutional mission and emerging student and workforce needs.
“Dr. Ruud is the ideal leader for this moment in Carroll’s journey,” said Fr. Patrick Beretta, Chair of Carroll’s Board of Trustees. “With a depth of experience shaped by years of presidential leadership and a strong grasp of the challenges facing higher education today, he brings a thoughtful and steady presence—one that honors our traditions while embracing the opportunities ahead. I am confident that under his leadership, the richness of our academic life and the spirit of our community will shine ever brighter.”
A practicing Catholic and former U.S. Army officer, Dr. Ruud holds a Ph.D. in Management and Organizational Behavior and an MBA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is committed to student success, inclusive excellence, and mission-driven innovation. He believes students learn best when they engage deeply, reflect on their experiences, and apply their knowledge in real-world settings. A strong supporter of the liberal arts, Dr. Ruud values their role in shaping critical thinking, communication, and ethical decision-making. He also brings NCAA leadership experience across Divisions I, II, and III, and sees athletics as an essential part of shaping student character, community pride, and lifelong leadership.
“From the outset, Dr. Ruud stood out as a candidate who could not only lead with strength and insight, but also inspire with purpose,” said Dr. Joyce Stewart ’79, co-chair of the presidential search committee. “His values mirror those of our Carroll community—faith, service, integrity, and excellence.”
Co-chair Tom Whyte ’83 added, “Dr. Ruud impressed us with his approachability, his commitment to student success, and his ability to lead change with grace and collaboration. We are thrilled to welcome him to Carroll.”
“Through my many conversations with thoughtful and faith-filled individuals, it became obvious that Carroll College is a very special place. The wonderful Catholic spirit that guides this institution is not only present—it is thriving,” said Dr. William Ruud. “Rooted in faith and committed to academic excellence, Carroll prepares students for lives of purpose through a focus on service, community, and the dignity of every person. I am eager to engage fully with the College, the Church, and the broader community.”
Carroll’s Presidential Leadership Profile called for an inspirational leader with a humble, servant-leadership style, strong communication skills, and a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing higher education today. Dr. Ruud brings these qualities with depth and consistency. His experience, steady leadership, and commitment to mission make him well prepared to advance Carroll’s Catholic, liberal arts tradition while guiding the college toward continued growth and innovation.
Dr. Ruud will succeed Dr. John Cech, who announced his retirement last August. Dr. Cech’s final day as president will be June 30, 2025.
