Carroll ASCE Team Shines at 2025 Symposium in Portland

The Carroll College ASCE student chapter traveled to Portland, Oregon, in April 2025 for the annual regional symposium—a rotating event that brings together civil engineering students from across the Northwest. This year, the Carroll team proudly competed in both the Concrete Canoe Competition and the Daniel W. Mead Paper Competition, an event focused on ethical issues in civil engineering.

Top Honors in Ethics Paper Competition

We are thrilled to announce that Carroll’s own Joselyn Reisner earned first place in the Daniel W. Mead Paper Competition. Her winning paper, Climate-Driven Infrastructure Disasters: A Civil Engineer’s Role, examined the growing ethical responsibilities engineers face in a world increasingly impacted by climate-related hazards.
Congratulations, Joselyn, on this well-deserved achievement!

Concrete Canoe: “Steamboat Willie” Sets Sail

The team also proudly designed, built, presented, and raced their concrete canoe—affectionately named Steamboat Willie. Making it to Portland intact is a success in itself, and the team was excited to showcase their craftsmanship and compete against peer institutions. The canoe performed admirably and served as the culmination of months of hands-on engineering work.

A Year of Hands-On Training, Outreach, and Growth

Beyond the spring symposium, Carroll’s ASCE chapter has had a full and productive year, marked by professional development, outreach, and community engagement. Highlights from the 2024–2025 academic year include:
    •    Hosting a pizza dinner and chapter introduction meeting to welcome new members
    •    Running the Second Annual Cornhole Tournament, which raised over $3,000
    •    Collaborating with Engineers Without Borders to construct a demonstration cinderblock wall
    •    Sending student members Liberty and Joselyn to the Student Chapter Leaders Workshop in San Diego
    •    Pouring and curing the 2025 concrete canoe in preparation for the spring competition
    •    Delivering a technical presentation at the Helena Engineers Club in March
    •    Presenting and racing Steamboat Willie at the Portland symposium
