Carroll ASCE Hosts Shop Days

Students working in the Carroll College Engineering Lab

On November 14 and 15, 2017, the Carroll College ASCE student chapter hosted “Shop Days” where students learned the proper operation and safety aspects of working with tools and equipment in the Carroll Civil Engineering Laboratory. The workshops were led by Lenci Kappes, PE, and Beth Kappes, PE, (Carroll class of 2009), who have been professional mentors for the ASCE student chapter for several years. Both Lenci and Beth are employed as professional engineers at the Montana Department of Transportation. Students worked with welding and steel cutting equipment, radial arm saws, drill presses, grinders, and other tools. Most students attending the workshops will be using the tools to construct a steel bridge for the 2018 AISC-ASCE Student Steel Bridge Competition. The regional competition will be held in April 2018 at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
