On March 25, the Departments of Social Work and Sociology and the Gender Studies Program are hosting a documentary screening and panel discussion commemorating the 114th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. We hope you will consider joining us.
The Triangle fire is a pivotal event in American history where 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, died in a garment factory fire in New York City. The devastating loss of life prompted widespread outrage, bringing attention to the unsafe working conditions that many workers faced. In the aftermath, public demand for reform grew, leading to significant changes in labor laws in New York and the United States.
The event will include a documentary screening (1 hour) and a panel (1 hour) composed of Carroll College faculty from the Departments of History, Political Science, Social Work, and Sociology.
We will hear the testimony of witnesses, watch a short film, and discuss the many important aspects of this historical event, including gender, ethnic, and immigrant significance.
This event is open to the public.
