Carroll Campus Campus Center Lower Campus Center 5:00pm Saints Against Racism Book Giveaway 04/18/2023 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm Overcoming racial injustice and building genuine equality is a long-term struggle and requires that we all pull together in both large and small ways. Carroll's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion taskforce wants to recognize and celebrate the anti-racist work that happens day-to-day on our campus. And!... we have free books to give away (summer reading anyone?) Here's how it works:Send us a copy of (or link to) any essay, artwork, podcast, creative writing, poem, video, musical composition, or course assignment that works in some way to understand or overcome racial injustice. There's nothing too big or small to qualify! Send these via email to Prof. Meyer (emeyer@carroll.edu) with "Saints Against Racism" in the Subject line by April 18th. In the email, be sure to include your name and a title for the work. That's it! Invite your friends and classmates to submit their work if you know they've done this kind of work this year. We will collect the anti-racist work you all have done on campus this semester and enter each student who submits work into a drawing for the free books (ten of them). Winning students will be notified and can collect their books in the last week of class. Then, we will celebrate and recognize Carroll student's anti-racist work by listing student names and the titles of their work on the college's webpage. We won't share the content of your work publicly (beyond the title) without asking directly for your permission. Sponsored by the Carroll College Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce Online 7:00pm Mark Johnson: Chinese Experience in Montana 04/18/2023 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm Join Carroll College on April 18, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Campus Center as author and historian Mark Johnson presents "The Middle Kingdom under the Big Sky: A History of the Chinese Experience in Montana." From the earliest days of non-Native settlement of Montana, when Chinese immigrants made up more than 10 percent of the territory’s population, Chinese pioneers played a key role in the region’s development. But this population, so crucial to Montana’s history, remains underrepresented in historical accounts, and popular attention to the Chinese in Montana tends to focus on sensational elements—exoticizing Chinese Montanans and distancing their experiences from our modern understanding. The Middle Kingdom under the Big Sky recovers the stories of Montana’s Chinese population in their own words and deepens understanding of Chinese experiences in Montana with a global lens. Author and Historian Mark Johnson has mined several large collections of primary documents left by Chinese pioneers, translated into English for the first time. These collections, spanning the 1880s-1950s, provide insight into the pressures the Chinese community faced—from family members back in China and from non-Chinese Montanans—as economic and cultural disturbances complicated acceptance of Chinese residents in the state. Through their own voices, Johnson reveals the agency of Chinese Montanans in the history of the American West and China. Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Carroll College History and Sociology Departments. Carroll Campus Campus Center Lower Campus Center | 6:00pm Philosophy Symposium: Loss & Legacy 04/19/2023 - 6:00pm to 9:00pm The Carroll College Department of Philosophy and Merlin CCC invite you to look at death-related grief as experienced by individuals and professionals within the community, integrating the contributions of art, literature, and science into a broad, unified philosophical and humanistic understanding. In the process, we’ll consider questions about mortality, expressions, and functions of grief. April 19 EventOur symposium will be held in the evening on Wednesday, April 19th at The Helena Avenue Theater and feature guests panelists Krys Holmes, Tim Holmes & Ashby Kinch. In addition to guest speakers and interwoven performance, the symposium will include ample time for Q & A with our guest scholars, facilitated by Merlin Student Scholar Fellow, Julianna Breit. Currently in her second year as the Merlin Student Scholar Fellow, Julianna Breit is a senior at Carroll College, double-majoring in Biochemistry and Philosophy and minoring in Neuroscience. Find out more and register May 3 EventWe’ll follow that two weeks later (on Wednesday, May 3rd) by a supplemental exploration of the practicalities and “business” of death, as prompted by the documentary “A Certain Kind of Death” (via New Philosopher Magazine’s public domain digital platform). Here, we’ll consider questions about preparation, meaning, and community, especially for those who have died (or are dying) with no next of kin. Our film & community conversation will be held in the evening in Reeder’s Alley Convention Center. Find out more and register The Carroll College Department of Philosophy encourages you to attend these events. About the Philosophy seriesIn this dynamic philosophy series we’ll look at what it means to be at the interface of loss and legacy. We’ll ask two central meta-questions: “How do we think about grief?” and “How do we think about our ancestors?” Each question could stand on its own. But by considering them together, in the ways that we actually encounter them – not as separate events, but rather, as intimately connected and mutually informative experiences – our symposia series recognizes the challenges (and skills) involved in navigating this unique space between the ways that we think about (and “handle”) loss and the ways that we think about (and “address”) legacy. In addition, while there are many ways to approach these questions, we’ll conduct our examination through the lens of philosophy, offering a particular set of tools by which to consider loss and legacy – not as the set of tools but rather as a set that can take us to some different places than other tools might. The series will consist of two main events (one in Spring and one in Fall) and two supplementary events, each of which will bring to the fore a note that is present but less dominant in the main gatherings. The main events will be panel-style symposia featuring guest speakers and a facilitator. The supplemental events will involve a film and community conversation. All events in the series are free and open to the community. Find out more and register Off Campus 7:00pm Pre-Med Club Meeting 01/25/2023 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm Come join the Pre-Med Club! Carroll Campus Campus Center Lower Campus Center 5:30pm Walk In Her Shoes 04/25/2023 - 5:30pm to 7:00pm April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Culture of Respect and the MPWRMNT Club is dedicated to making the culture at Carroll College safe for students who have fallen victim of sexual assault. According to the Carroll College campus climate survey on sexual assault, 42% of female students do not feel safe on campus, and the majority of female students feel that they themselves or one of their friends are at risk of sexual assault. To address this fear, we ask men on campus and supportive figures from the community (i.e., the Friendship Center, and law enforcement, including VAWA Officers) to put themselves in women's shoes and declare among their peers that they stand against gender-based violence. Our program is adapted from the national program Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. The funding and buy-in needed for this event weren’t applicable to our campus like the larger universities, including the University of Montana. Our adaptation of the program got great feedback last year from students, the friendship center, and Dean of Students Annette Walstad. Our event will start with a friendship center coordinator sharing statistics about sexual violence on college campuses, and the importance this event brings to community building and the feeling of safety on campus. Men will randomly draw a number of what order to pick their heels and get ready for a race. The relay race will consist of five teams five. Five runners will be racing at a time to complete challenges with gender-positive imaging (i.e., pinning a sexual assault awareness pin to themselves). Winners of the race will receive Sexual Assault Awareness shirts and gift cards to a place of their choice. All runners will be provided with pizza and water. This event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Empowerment center to provide more take-home resources for the center as well as chairs. To fundraise, we will set up a donation website with the business office for students, friends, and families to donate.
