During the last pandemic, in 1919, The melodrama Believe Me, Xantippe was performed at Carroll College. We read this play as part of our 100th anniversary play reading series last November. When it became obvious that producing a musical was not a good idea this fall, we went back to that script and decided to adapt it for a modern audience with a modern twist and more female characters. Stephen Alan Seder and Nicole Lauren have created this new comedy from the bones of the original.

The Toilet Paper Caper: A Pandemic Melodrama tells the story of an elaborate prank. After a string of senseless burglaries overrun his neighborhood, a hot-headed rich bachelor, George MacFarland, ignorantly bets his friends he can evade arrest for an entire year upon committing a criminal act. His friends take the bet and George is skirted away across the United States on a whirlwind adventure full of life-or-death poker games, explosions, evil villains, uproarious sheriffs, and damsels in distress. This sensational tale, set within a global pandemic, is modeled after the stylizations of turn-of-the-century-melodrama and vaudevillian theatre. While having interactive moments with viewers on site, this production will be broadcast live for those isolated at home and will be sure to delight audiences. Tune in for a classic shoot em’ up western comedy, set in viral times, with many twists and turns. Directed by Amber Barnes.

Lecture: Religion, Race, and the American Dog

Lecture: Religion, Race, and the American Dog graphic

Join Dr. Katharine Mershon for her talk entitled: "Religion, Race, and the American Dog."  Free and open to the public via Zoom. Part of the Roeben-Raunig Lecture series.

Watch the online panel here.

How are animals part of the stories Americans tell about religion? What can stories about animals tell us about people? This talk will analyze narratives about religion and dogs that appear in unexpected settings. By examining the 2007 dogfighting case involving NFL player Michael Vick, we will discuss how human social justice and animal ethics are connected to religion and to each other.

About Katharine Mershon

Katharine Mershon received her Ph.D. in Religion, Literature, and Visual Culture from the University of Chicago Divinity School. After teaching religious ethics at Whitman College, she is now Assistant Professor of Religion at Western Carolina University. Her teaching and research examine how religion operates in spaces outside of those deemed explicitly religious—from the NFL to the animal shelter. Her work grew out of her experiences adopting a pit-bull type dog named Zoe, and becoming involved in animal rescue in Chicago.

About Jeania Ree Moore

Reverend Jeania Ree Moore is a doctoral student in African American Studies and Religious Studies at Yale University and a columnist for Sojourners magazine. A graduate of Yale University, Emory University, and the University of Cambridge, Jeania Ree has research interests in theology, aesthetics, race, and creation. Her current focus on racialized proximity to nonhuman animals grew out of her lifelong love of animals and awareness of how race plays a role in animal encounters and ethics. Jeania Ree is an ordained deacon in The United Methodist Church.

We’ll be walking to the County Elections Office and anyone who wants is welcome to join us for Big Dipper Ice Cream afterwards. We’ll be meeting in the Upper Cube beforehand.

If you’re not registered to vote, we’re happy to help you register, and you can even vote while you’re there! If you’ve already voted, visit https://app.mt.gov/voterinfo/ to check the status of your ballot (active, sent, accepted, or rejected) to make sure your ballot was received and processed.

We’re also available to answer any other questions and help you make sure your vote is counted this year. Contact hbadaruddin@carroll.edu or memichelotti@carroll.edu with any questions.
