Shields Honored with Distinguished Scholar Award

Dr. Gerry Shields received the Distinguished Scholar Award presented by Carroll College faculty, staff and students in recognition of significant faculty scholarship.  These activities include, research and scholarly publications, professional awards and honors, contributions to one’s discipline, and participation at conferences and seminars.

Dr. Shields has served our biology department for 17 years as the James J. Manion Endowed Chair of Biological Sciences and has been instrumental in changing the culture of research in the biology program. His love for science and research is palpable, and he enjoys sharing his passion by teaching our students the importance and value of research. Gerry is devoted to strengthening the research environment at Carroll and promoting the scholarly development and success of the science faculty, and serves as one of the leading voices in keeping our undergraduate research program vibrant and relevant. He is a wonderful role model who has made great contributions to science through his research, but even greater contributions to our students and the college through his mentorship and sharing his love for science.  

This award was presented to Dr. Shields during the 2016 commencement ceremonies.
