A Sad Farewell: John "Shaun" Corette III, 1936-2017

Portraits of John "Shaun" Corette III

We are saddened to share the news that former trustee, dear friend and generous supporter of the college John “Shaun” Corette III passed away on Saturday, December 2, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, at the age of 81.

Shaun Corette, born and raised in Butte, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Montana in 1958, and obtained his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1961. He had a long and distinguished career in law, retiring from practice in 2011 as a partner at the international law firm DLA Piper US LLP, in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Corette served on the Carroll College Board of Trustees from 2007-2015, chaired the Investment Committee, and joined the Board Fellows in August 2015. He and his wife Mary Ann were very generous benefactors to the college over the years providing for student scholarships and funding for several significant projects in the library named in honor of his parents Jack & Sallie Corette.

“Shaun was very proud his association with Carroll as a member of the Board of Trustees, as well as his family’s long and distinguished history with the College.  Shaun shared generously of his time, talent and treasure with Carroll and we are grateful for his passion and commitment to ensure the College retained its reputation as a leading Catholic, liberal arts and pre-professional college in the Pacific Northwest," said Candie Cain '82, Interim Vice President for Advancement.

“It was my extreme honor and privilege, and always entertaining, to work closely with Shaun while he served on Carroll’s Board of Trustees,” shared Lori Peterson, ’87, CPA – VP Finance & Administration. “Shaun provided Carroll with a wealth of financial expertise along with sound and forthright counsel.  He pushed Carroll to strive for excellence in every area with a sharp eye for detail and common sense. Shaun's greatest passion was for the students of Carroll, often going out of his way to engage in conversations and always ensuring decisions were made in their best interest. Through our conversations, it was apparent Shaun was a master story-teller, possessed an innate sense of humor, and deeply loved his Family, Montana, and Carroll College .  As an alum, the parent of an alum, and as a long time employee, I know Carroll is a special place defined by the people and relationships that develop here. Shaun tirelessly served Carroll College, became a one of a kind friend and mentor to me,  and because of that he will always hold  a place at the top of my list of special ‘Carroll People.’”
