"Crimson Winter" - A Labor of Love

Bringing the film “Crimson Winter” to the big screen has been a true labor of love for Carroll grad Bryan Ferriter (’10).

Ferriter is the film’s lead actor, writer and director with fellow Carroll classmates comprising much of the cast and crew.

In his Helena Independent Record interview, Ferriter shared how his experiences at Carroll and as a member of the Fighting Saints Football team helped shape him into the filmmaker he is today. “The things I learned from college football really helped us,” he said. “We have this perseverance and will to win and are tight as a group to fight for each other. It was surprising how it spilled over into filmmaking.”

“Crimson Winter” is a vampire love story filmed in Helena’s surrounding hills, and it is making its U.S. premiere Friday evening, Jan. 24, at the Myrna Loy Center.  Additional film screenings are at the Myrna - January 25, 26, 28 and 30.

The film has impressed Montana Film Office Commissioner Deny Staggs. “The film looks phenomenal,” said Staggs. “The energy is great. And the location value is phenomenal. ”  The Elkhorn Mountains in the film compare favorably with New Zealand’s scenery in “The Hobbit,” he said. “What they got for $400,000 looks way more than that. That’s what’s great about their project. They knew their locations, and they used their known asset,” Staggs said.

Saintly Deeds

Dr. John Thomas (’64) of Milwaukee, Wisc., recently received the Council of the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine’s 2013 Humanitarian Award for his dedicated work with Repairers of the Breach.  The Humanitarian Award is given to an “exemplary individual or group who has significantly improved the welfare of our community by virtue of their courage, tirelessness, compassion and vision.”

As was noted in his nomination letter: “Dr. Thomas practiced pediatric cardiology in the Milwaukee area for decades before retiring. Since his retirement, he has dedicated his time, energy and enthusiasm to the poor and homeless of Milwaukee by volunteering at Repairers of the Breach. The Repairers of the Breach clinic underwent an upheaval in the last couple of years that threatened to jeopardize its mission for providing medical care to the homeless community.  Dr. Thomas has been the physician backbone of the clinic that has allowed it to not only endure but begin to grow.  He provides free medical care at the clinic most days of the week and provides invaluable guidance to the staff.”

Congratulations Dr. Thomas.  You make Carroll proud!

IN MEMORIAM

Ralph Theodore Anderson (class of 1951) was born in Helena on March 27, 1929, to Carl Anderson and Esther Johnson Anderson. Ralph attended St. Helena School kindergarten and Central School and graduated from Helena High School with the famous class of 1947. After graduating from Helena High School, Ralph attended Carroll College in Helena for his freshman year and was always proud to have been on the honor roll at Carroll that first year. He then transferred to the University of Montana in Missoula, joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated from the university. Ralph was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and was called to the United States Marine Corps, where he served as drill sergeant in Parris Island, S.C., and was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1952.

Ralph loved Helena and supported her in a thousand ways over the years. He also had a deep commitment to Carroll College. Ralph envisioned and raised funds to complete “Founders Corner” for Carroll. Ralph had a heart as big as Helena and then some and was involved in many fundraisers for needy people and organizations over the years.

Ralph founded Hometown Helena Pride, which was befitting him for sure. He was a member of Helena Chamber of Commerce and president of Helena Ambassadors for two decades, and, truly, being an ambassador and promoting Helena was one of his greatest joys. A real highlight of Ralph’s life was Monday morning coffee with the class of 1947.

David Lawrence Mazza (’64) of Trumbull, Conn., devoted husband of Deborah Simpkins Mazza and loving father of Elizabeth Mazza, passed away on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at his home. Born on May 5, 1942 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Dominic ("Happy") and Clara D'Andrea Mazza. He was awarded his bachelor's degree from Carroll College and went on to receive two master's degrees, a MA in History from Fordham University and MA in Educational Administration from University of Bridgeport. Always in pursuit of knowledge, David went on to receive his Ph.D. in American History from St. John's University. Dr. Mazza taught high school history in Stamford for 35 years and, upon retiring became an adjunct professor for Norwalk Community College   For more on his life, read here

The sound of piano music throughout many locations in the Helena community was noticeably silenced on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. Donald Andrew Murphy (’59), a lifelong resident of Helena and pianist, lost his courageous medical battle and passed into the hands of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Donald was born March 5, 1935, in Columbus Hospital in Great Falls to Joseph Mathew Murphy and Ann P. Karaffa.

Donald attended schools in Helena, graduating from Cathedral High School. Later he attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., and graduated from Carroll College and Eastern Montana College with degrees in education and English. He became an elementary school teacher, teaching in rural schools, a military base in Alaska and for over 30 years in the Helena School District. He taught in Smith and Four Georgians schools. His students would remember his tap dancing on top of his desk at the end of the year if his students completed certain reading requirements. He loved the profession of education. Donald retired from teaching in 1989.

Margaret Ruth Poore (‘71) died Jan. 16, 2014, surrounded by her siblings after a short illness.  Margaret was a loving and sensitive soul, curious and intelligent, generous and kind. Margaret was born on April 28, 1949 in Great Falls. Margaret attended Catholic schools in Billings, graduating from Central Catholic High in 1967, and went on to pursue a teaching degree at Carroll College.

After living in Seattle many years, she missed Montana dearly and returned to “her beloved home” in Helena in July. Margaret was thrilled to be back in Montana, returning to her Helena circle of friends and family. On the day she left us, she said, “I got to see some snowstorms since my move. I’d missed snow so much.”

Fresh Paint, Fresh Perspectives

Several dozen Carroll students honored Dr. King’s legacy by spending the afternoon of Martin Luther King Jr. Day providing community service at God’s Love homeless shelter in downtown Helena.   The day of service is annually coordinated by Fr. Jerry Lowney, sociology professor emeritus.  “It’s important for them to know that others are needy, and they should help them,” said Lowney.

The students spent their time applying a fresh coat of paint to the dormitory.  “We like to have something done that’s going to last and have a lasting effect,” said Joe Wojton, a co-director at God’s Love.

Join Dr. Kelly Cline for the first of his popular astronomy & physics lecture series presentations. How does gravity work?  How does the force of gravity travel through empty space from the Sun to the Earth, or from the Earth to the Moon?  Isaac Newton called gravity “spooky” because it travels through empty space.  Albert Einstein said that gravity is a bending of space itself, and his equations work very well so far.  But many scientists think that we need a deeper understanding of gravity.  Perhaps the force of gravity may be carried by particles called gravitons.  Around the world teams of researchers are on a race to discover gravity’s greatest mystery!

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and is closed weekends and college holidays. For more information, call 447-4302.
