February 13, 2015 QuickNotes: Carroll Adds Competition

February 13, 2015

Cascade'ing Competition

Starting in the fall, Carroll men’s and women’s soccer (and softball in the spring of ‘16), will have a host of new schools to compete against in conference play. Carroll, along with fellow Montana NAIA schools Rocky Mountain College and the University of Great Falls, have been approved for Associate Membership to the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC).

President Tom Evans was thankful to the CCC presidents for this decision. “It is another example of how the Frontier and Cascade Conferences can work together to provide the best athletic experience for our students by ensuring that they can play their schedules closer to home in Montana and the Northwest, experience better opportunities for post season play and compete against schools with similar enrollments and missions. I believe that both of our conferences and the entire NAIA are stronger as a result of this decision," said Dr. Evans.

With the addition of these schools, the CCC anticipates having 14 men's soccer teams, 12 women's soccer teams and 10 softball teams. The number of teams competing also increases the number of automatic qualifiers to the NAIA national tournaments from one to two in each sport.

Carroll, along with Rocky and UGF, will continue to compete in the Frontier Conference in all other sports.

First Annual Lecture on Faith and Reason: "Science and Religion: The Myth of Conflict," Guest lecturer Dr. Stephen Barr, Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Delaware, Mar. 5, 7 p.m., Lower Campus Center, Carroll College

Sponsored by the Carroll College Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice, the Physics Program, the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Annette Moran Center and Student Activities

Professor Barr will argue that the supposed conflict between science and religion has really been a conflict between "scientific materialism" and religion. He contends that the science-versus-religion myth is based on an outdated view of scientific history and a skewed interpretation of what science has actually discovered. He will begin by telling the story of the relation between Christianity and science, including some dramatic facts that are relatively little known. He will then discuss five great discoveries of the twentieth century, primarily in physics, and argue that they are more consonant with the traditional Jewish and Christian view of the cosmos and of human beings than with materialist philosophy.
