CAMP Explores Moab for Spring Break

The Carroll Adventure and Mountaineering Program (C.A.M.P.) took their annual spring break trip to Moab, Utah, seeking warm weather and a multitude of recreational opportunities. The trip filled up in less than 10 minutes after it opened on Feb 13. The crew of 15 students and five leaders, including Director of C.A.M.P. Brad Maddock, spent five days and five nights underneath the desert sky at a campsite on the Colorado River just outside of town. The students spent two days hiking in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, one day mountain biking, one day rock climbing, and one day navigating a technical canyon and rappelling. Read more.

The students learned valuable front country camping skills, as well as many technical skills for mountain biking, rock climbing, and rappelling. Aside from the technical skills learned, the group learned much about teamwork, the desert’s geology, flora and fauna, and Leave No Trace ethics of how to lessen their impact on the desert’s fragile landscape. The trip is open to all classes and provides a neat way for upper classman and first-year students to bond and gain friendships with peers they might not otherwise cross paths with.
