August 28, 2015 QuickNotes: Welcome Back!

August 28, 2015

Welcome Back!

Students are moved in, classes have begun, and campus is bustling! We are excited to begin the 2015-16 school year with our record first-year enrollment and nearly 1,500 students on campus.

We first reported about the new remodel in St. Charles back in June but check it out now! Our rock star contractors put the finishing touches on the Father Gene Peoples Lobby just as students arrived. The area on the ground floor of St. Charles includes a full kitchen (which has already seen a few full course dinners served there), front desk, IT help area, booths, couches, high top tables, large screen tvs and a fireplace. It’s been a popular spot both night and day. Check out the photos on the Carroll Facebook page

Next time you are on campus, make the climb up the St. Charles steps and see this fabulous new area for our students.

Blessing of the Hands

Carroll’s Nursing Department started off the academic year with the tradition of welcome and celebration at the Annual Blessing of the Hands Ceremony, which recognizes the dedication of nurses to bring comfort, kindness, respect, and spiritual support to patients.

It is also a way to welcome students back for their junior and senior years AND a lovely welcome to the sophomore students who are just beginning their nursing careers. See more photos of our wonderful nursing students here

Archbishop Hunthausen Celebrates 94 Years!

Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen recently celebrated his 94th birthday on August 21.

As many know, Archbishop Hunthausen was a student at Carroll, class of 1943, as well as a standout athlete, professor, coach, athletic director and the youngest president in Carroll’s history, serving from 1957-1962. The soon-to-be constructed Hunthausen Activity Center is to be named in his honor.

As a tribute to a man that has provided so much of himself to the Helena community and who has inspired generations through his example of extraordinary compassion and service, the Helena IR ran a story on the Archbishop in celebration of his birthday.

Happiest of birthdays Archbishop!

Serving in Uganda

Four Carroll College students and professor emeritus Jack Oberweiser spent the latter part of August serving with the Montana Dental Outreach Team at a refugee camp in Uganda.

Oberweiser and the students were joined by three dentists, including MDOT founder Dr. Tom Bartoletti, and three other students to form a team of 11.

The Carroll students included recent graduates Jay Bouchard, Sancho RidesAtTheDoor and Abby Lengenfelder along with current student Ryan Edens.

Jay Bouchard ’15, who worked for the Helena IR this past summer as a copy editor, provided daily dispatches from Uganda, which are shared below.

The Carroll community has been very saddened by the news that Carroll sophomore Elizabeth Schweizer passed away on August 18 . Elizabeth, from Ramona, California, died as a result of a hiking accident in Switzerland.

Elizabeth was a chemistry major who came to Carroll in the fall of 2014. She was a member of the cross country team and an IMPACT caller in the college’s Office for Institutional Advancement.

"We are greatly saddened to hear of Elizabeth's passing and extend our deepest sympathies to her parents Mary and Christian Schweizer," said President Tom Evans. "She will be missed greatly by her friends, classmates, teammates, professors and all who had the great fortune of knowing her."

Elizabeth is survived by her parents and four siblings. Please keep Elizabeth and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Eric Hall, assistant professor of theology and philosophy and the Hunthausen Professor of Peace and Social Justice, has just published his first full monograph, The Paradox of Authenticity. The official context for the book is the following: The pursuit of authenticity is the pursuit of a social transcendence that allows one to become one’s own original self-creation. Eric E. Hall argues that this transcendence is impossible without the one who is actually transcendent love: God.

Eric shares, “If you don’t like the way that’s written, I wouldn’t buy the book. (It’s pretty expensive anyways.) I wrote the whole book that way because, well, it’s what we sometimes have to write as academics! Whereas it might hinder reflection for those outside the discipline, the technical language actually fosters thought for those of us in the field.”

What’s the book about in English? “Learn to let go of this social pressure to pursue personal uniqueness at all costs and try to become a living emblem of divine love instead.” You likely can check the book out from the Carroll library soon enough. Eric also says that if you can figure out where the paradox of this situation lies, he’ll give you an A in his class. He also promises a far more readable book due to be published by Fortress Press this coming spring, humbly entitled The Homebrewed Christianity Guide to God: Everything You ever Wanted to Know about the Almighty.

Annual Constitution Day Lecture - Constitutional Twins: Compassion and Individualism, Sept. 8, 7 p.m., Trinity Lounge, Carroll College

Astronomy Lecture Series: Dr. Kelly Cline presents "The New Horizons Mission to Pluto," Sept. 10, 7 p.m., 101/202 Simperman/Wiegand Amphitheatre, Carroll College

In July of this year, New Horizons became the first spacecraft to visit Pluto. Astronomers were amazed at the strange and bizarre images that New Horizons sent back of Pluto and its moon Charon. New Horizons revealed that Pluto is far more complex and intricate than astronomers were expecting. Even more surprising, Pluto is geologically active, showing that areas the size of Texas have formed recently. Join us for a discussion of the exciting new discoveries from the New Horizons mission to Pluto!

This event is free and the Helena community is invited to attend.
