The Artaza Center just announced its Student Scholarship Award recipients for Summer 2017 and Fall 2017 Global Education Programs.  They received 17 completed applications, and were able to provide scholarships to 13 recipients.  Scholarships ranged from $350 to $2,000 per student, and the total amount awarded was $13,850. “Student financial need is taken into consideration, of course. But also, the winning scholarship applications were well-written, compelling, thorough, and filled with global learning goals and plans,” said Artaza Director Cheri Long. “We were impressed with the students’ essays.”

When asked “how will you ensure that your experience contributes to the goals and mission of the Artaza Center for Excellence in Global Education?” one student wrote: “For one, I promise to have walked in partnership with those that I will be working among – and studying with – throughout the duration of the program. No matter the person’s background, beliefs, or lifestyle, I will treat them as an equal and learn from them and teach what valuable information I know in return.”

These scholarships will help students do amazing things including:

  • A nursing student, and pre-medical student, and a pre-physical therapy student will complete internships in Ecuador, with the goal of becoming bi-lingual medical providers
  • A nursing student will shadow in a hospital in Thailand, learning from a mentor nurse and her colleagues about how healthcare is delivered in other cultural and economic situations
  • Anthrozoology students will travel with Professor Suthers to South Africa to expand their practical knowledge to include Wildlife Conservation
  • Two students will study abroad in Spain and Italy
  • And, a student who just finished her first year at Carroll will travel to Morocco to stay in a host family and complete a service-learning project, while improving her Arabic skills!

“We are proud to be able to support these students, from such a wide variety of disciplines and career goals, to gain valuable cross-cultural competencies and global awareness that will help them to be successful in their careers and as global citizens,” said Long.
