Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen (1921-2018)

Portraits of Archbishop Hunthausen, young and senior

The Most Reverend Raymond G. Hunthausen, former President of Carroll College, sixth Bishop of Helena and Archbishop Emeritus of Seattle, passed away Sunday, July 22, at his residence in Helena.

After graduating from Carroll in 1943 and from the seminary in 1946, then Father Hunthausen served as priest, professor, coach, athletic director, and then President of Carroll College before serving as Bishop of Helena and finally as Archbishop of Seattle.

We have been blessed to have been the recipient of his guidance, wisdom and grace for many, many years. His love for Carroll was evident every time he spoke of it and always with a twinkle in his eye. It is seen in the trees, stone walls and buildings that he was instrumental in creating, enhancing the beauty of our campus.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, the priests and faithful of the Diocese of Helena and the Archdiocese of Seattle, and all who he influenced throughout his amazing life.

Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him.
