Preventing Polio

Dr. Belle Marie, professor in the Business Department, participated in the polio National Immunization Days (NID) in Nuh, Haryana, India. Nuh is located approximately 45 miles from Delhi and endures ongoing poverty. The goal of NID throughout India was to immunize 170 million children per day against polio during the five-day immunization campaign.

Dr. Marie is a member of the Helena Sunrise Rotary club. Rotary International launched PolioPlus in 1985, the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a public health initiative. In 1985, polio was endemic in 125 countries with an occurrence rate of 1000 new cases per day. By 2014, only three endemic countries remain - Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria – with an occurrence rate of less than 1 new case per day. India was declared polio-free in 2014 after three years with no new cases. Learn more here.

Dr. Marie commented, “As polio immunization volunteers, we were welcomed by Indian communities. It was a privilege to participate in NID with other Rotarians from all over the world, and it’s exciting to think that our work assisted efforts to make polio the first human disease to be eradicated in the 21st century.”

Dr. Marie has previous academic experience in India. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study women in contemporary India in 2005. Dr. Marie has presented papers at academic conferences from her research and taught courses at Carroll College related to socioeconomic issues in India.
