About

Areas of Specialization: Cognitive Neuroscience

Dr. Nikki Honzel is an associate professor of Psychology at Carroll College.  She completed her undergraduate education at Colgate University in New York and her Ph.D. at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.  As a graduate student, she had many wonderful research opportunities. She traveled to Jyväskylä, Finland to study the neurological changes associated with learning phonemes. She also had the opportunity to work at Electrical Geodesics Inc. where she studied the brain’s response to feedback.  In 2006, she was a fellow at the Summer Institute for Neuroscience at Dartmouth.  After graduate school, Dr. Honzel spent six years working at the Veterans Affair Medical Center in Northern California investigating cognitive changes in patients with traumatic brain injury as well as patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.  She returned back home to Montana in 2014 and joined the Faculty at Carroll College.  At Carroll, she has enjoyed working with students on a few different research projects and being part of the PURSUE fellowship team.

Currently, Dr. Honzel teaches courses required for the Psychology major and Neuroscience minor, including Physiological Psychology, Brain and Behavior, and Abnormal Psychology.  When she is not in the classroom, you can find her baking goodies with her kid, kayaking and photographing wildlife, or singing with the Helena Symphony choral.
