Service is central to the mission of Carroll College, and through the Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice, students are given regular opportunities to live that mission in tangible ways.
On February 14, approximately 45 students and two faculty members took part in Service Saturday, volunteering at six locations across Helena. The day began with a prayer and blessing from Chris Yakewich of Saint Martin and Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, followed by muffins, coffee, and juice before students headed out to serve.
Volunteers spent the morning working at the Habitat for Humanity build site, cleaning and organizing at the ReStore and Helena Food Share, sorting and placing donations at Good Samaritans thrift store, organizing inventory at Family Promise, serving lunch at God’s Love, and visiting and playing games with residents at Helena Pointe Senior Living. Each group served for two and a half hours before returning to campus to celebrate with pizza and share reflections on their experiences.
For many students, the day was both meaningful and memorable.
“Getting to celebrate Valentine’s Day in service to the elderly was so impactful. I was able to spend time with my fellow college students and with the elderly who are able to share so much about the world and their lives. Getting to engage in these types of opportunities are always so meaningful and fun. I am very grateful that Carroll through CPJ allows students to have these experiences and always look forward to serving our community.” ~ Jack Conway, senior, Creswell, OR (ASCC President)
“Service Saturday is an amazing Carroll experience! It truly makes you grateful for the community here at Carroll and we have the opportunity to serve those around us from the graces we have received from campus!” ~ Gianna Valenzuela, first-year, Evergreen, CO
“This Service Saturday I was able to go to Good Samaritan’s thrift store to sort clothing donations. It was a fun morning spent meeting the workers and spending time serving our community among friends!” ~ Grace Dupre, senior, Hillsboro, OR
“This weekend I was able to help serve at the Habitat for Humanity build site. We helped frame walls and anchor them according to the floor plan. I really enjoyed getting to use a nail gun and meeting the other volunteers.” ~ Taylor Gallo, sophomore, Miles City, MT
Service Saturdays are designed not only to meet community needs but also to foster reflection, gratitude, and connection among students. The Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice extends sincere thanks to all who volunteered and contributed their time and energy.
