Carroll College proudly congratulates Dr. William G. “Jerry” Berberet ’63, who has been named the 2025 recipient of the Ernest L. Boyer Award from the New American Colleges & Universities (NACU). The award honors leaders who embody Ernest Boyer’s vision of a “New American college” — institutions that blend liberal arts learning, professional preparation, and civic engagement to meet society’s evolving needs.
A Carroll graduate in history and English, Jerry earned his PhD in history and went on to a distinguished career in higher education leadership. He returned to his alma mater as a trustee (2005–06) and later as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2006 until his retirement in 2009. Throughout his career, he remained deeply connected to Carroll and committed to strengthening its academic mission.
Jerry has also been one of Carroll’s most generous and forward-thinking supporters. In addition to helping establish and sustain Carroll’s involvement in NACU, the national consortium he founded, he has invested in programs that enrich faculty scholarship, support students, and honor Carroll’s humanities tradition. His gifts include the Henry (Hank) Burgess Professorship in English, summer faculty research grants, the Montana Catholic High School room grants, the Fr. William Greytak Professorship, a family endowed scholarship, and numerous other initiatives that continue to benefit the Carroll community.
