Earth Day Lecture on MT Climate Solutions - Apr 12

Thursday, March 29, 2018

HELENA, MT-- Earth Day is coming early to Carroll College with an evening devoted to Montana climate science and local public action, on Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in the Simperman Hall Weigand Amphitheatre.

The Montana Climate Assessment, a product of the Montana University System’s Montana Institute on Ecosystems, is a first-of-its-kind study. It will be presented by its lead author, Dr. Cathy Whitlock. The assessment describes past and future climate trends that affect different sectors of the Montana economy.

“The central goal of this effort was to create a product that would be useful to Montanans in planning for and adapting to a changing climate,” said Dr. Whitlock. “The assessment’s findings foresee a hotter future for Montana, but it is the specific details about what this means that we hope citizens will find useful.”

“There has never been a more pressing time for local climate solutions,” says Carroll College professor Jonathan Matthews. “The Montana Climate Assessment relays the impending threat to our health and our livelihoods. It is our job to use these findings to inform our future choices.”

The Carroll College Environmental Program and Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice will host the event in collaboration with local community-action groups, Sleeping Giant Citizens Council, Citizens Climate Lobby, and Montana Chapter of the Sierra Club. These organizations are taking action on climate change at the city, state, and national level.

“I believe that seeing people stand up for climate action at all levels of government sends a powerful message,” says John Hoffland, CCL Helena chapter Co-chair. “It also shows the many ways people can help redirect our communities toward a more resilient future.”

Professor of Theology Eric Meyer and city commissioner Rob Farris-Olsen will also give remarks, with all three speakers closing in a Q&A panel.

The Earth Day Early Action event will take place on Thursday, April 12th in the Simperman Hall Weigand Amphitheatre on the Carroll College Campus at 7:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public.
