About

For Theodore (Ted) Olenick ’17, Carroll was more than a place to earn a degree. It was a community that challenged him academically, strengthened his faith, and helped shape the physician and leader he is today.

Ted graduated from Carroll in 2017 with a major in Biology and a minor in History before continuing his education at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).

Today, Ted is completing his Pediatric residency through Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as part of the United States Air Force. Soon, he and his family will begin their next chapter in Idaho, where he will serve as the base pediatrician at Mountain Home Air Force Base.

“I chose Carroll not only for its outstanding academic reputation, but for its size, its faith background, its location, and for the amazing people I met while visiting,” Ted shared.

As he reflects on his journey from Carroll to medical school and residency, one achievement stands out: receiving the Dean’s Award at his medical school graduation for excellence in academics and leadership.

Ted credits Carroll’s close-knit environment for helping him develop the confidence to pursue opportunities he may not have otherwise considered.

“Carroll’s size and tight community did not allow me to be complacent and pushed me to take on leadership roles,” he said. “That led me to serving as president of my medical school class and becoming a national liaison for various academic chapters in medicine.”

Beyond leadership opportunities, Ted says Carroll’s mentorship prepared him for the realities of both life and medicine.

“My mentors at Carroll prepared me with the skills to learn from and deal with failures and ethical dilemmas that occur as part of life and medicine.”

That mentorship continued to make an impact even after graduation. During medical school interviews, Ted consistently received feedback about the strength and personalization of his recommendation letters, something he believes opened doors and gave him an advantage throughout the process.

Academically, Ted felt prepared from day one.

“I consistently felt advanced during my postgraduate schooling, which I largely attribute to the close relationships with professors and their willingness to go the extra mile for my learning and to better my study habits,” he said. “It is difficult to fall through the cracks at Carroll, and there are always people to help.”

But for Ted, Carroll’s impact reaches far beyond academics and career preparation.

“I still consider my time at Carroll to be some of the fondest memories I have,” he reflected. “Beyond meeting my better half there, many of my best friends in life, I met there. Carroll has a way of changing you for the better if you let it.”

When asked what he would tell prospective students considering Carroll, Ted pointed to something deeper than career outcomes.

“What makes Carroll special in these days of constant noise is the peace and community it provides,” he said. “It not only prepares you academically for your career, but provides a framework of faith and community that shapes the other parts of your life as well. I couldn’t endorse it enough.”
