JOINING FORCES TO FIGHT COVID
This value of this research is that it monitors for presence of infection within our community; tracks trends in infection within the community; and screens for infections at a targeted site to trigger additional individual-based testing.
This time-intensive testing took place weekly throughout the fall semester and has continued into the spring semester as well. The team of researchers at Carroll includes Stefanie Otto-Hitt, associate professor of biology, Theresa McHugh, assistant professor of biology, and Ashley Beck, assistant professor of biology.
The Wastewater Surveillance data now has a prominent placement as its own webpage on the Lewis & Clark Public Health COVID-19 Hub. In addition to serving as location to share the data weekly, the webpage provides a clear and easily understood explanation of the process. NEWS LITERACY LESSON
As part of News Literacy Week, KTVH TV partnered with Carroll College in hosting a Zoom roundtable discussion with KTVH’s Chief Political reporter Mike Dennison and students from Professor Jeremy Johnson’s Montana State Politics class. The focus of the roundtable conversation revolved around political coverage of the legislature and other government, and what it means to ethically, accurately and fairly report the news.
“The opportunity for the students to talk to a senior figure covering political news in Montana was invaluable,” said Professor Johnson. “The students appreciated delving into questions about challenges the news media faces covering politics on a daily basis in such a polarized, partisan environment. The students received a first-hand perspective rather than simply learning about these issues from only a theoretical or academic perspective.”

RECENTLY PUBLISHED
2019 recipient of Carroll’s Alumni Achievement Award Tom “Harp” Harpole '88, recently had another book published, Regarding Willingness: Chronicles of a Fraught Life. As shared on Amazon, Tom has been published in Smithsonian Air & Space, Sports Illustrated, Crocodil, Montana Quarterly, Whitefish Review, and more. In 1986 his story “The Last of Butch” was selected as The Best Short Story in the British Isles. His work has been short-listed for the National Magazine Award twice, and translated into six languages. He has been a guest reader on NPR more than a dozen times. Harpole writes in a voice that uses his natural wit and humor to shed light on a life of stories that bring readers to the edge of danger. “Tom Harpole is what you might call a thinking man’s Evel Knievel,” ~ Aaron Parrett, Montana author and musician.
A Carroll alumna reached out to share with us that Jeannine Brown '78 (J. Leigh Brown) has a book out, Inside the String, which the details can be found at 8finchproductions.com. It was shared that while at Carroll and after graduation, Jeannine was employed with Rocky Mountain Development Council working with “at risk” teenagers. She gave her heart and soul to the job and is responsible for the Spirit of Service program in Helena. After the stint with RMDC, she went to work for Federal Express. She works part time with the State now and writes in her spare time and according to this alumna, "Jeannine reminds me of what Carroll is all about...service!"

Carroll nursing alum Nick Pacella '04, MSN, CNS, was featured in Point Loma Nazarene's Viewpoint magazine sharing the value a liberal arts education has on his outlook on care, “As well as taking the science core curriculum, Pacella took philosophy, history, and theology courses. Having a humanities foundation gave him a fresh perspective regarding his future career as a nurse. Michael "Mike" Foster '82 has been named Director of Montana Department of Agriculture by Governor Gianforte. Most recently, Foster has served as state executive director of USDA Farm Services Agency. Read announcement here.

Kyle Sessions ‘17 has been selected to clerk for the Oregon State Court of Appeals. He is currently a second-year law student at Willamette University’s College of Law in Salem, OR. Kyle is the 2L class president, having also served as the 1L president. While attending Carroll, Kyle was active with the Talking Saints which prepared him for Willamette’s Moot Court.

Carroll’s nursing students are gathering items to make hygiene kits for God’s Love Shelter. Their Health & Hygiene Drive runs through February 8. Needed items include: toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, chapstick, bars of soap, hand sanitizer (travel size), combs/hairbrushes and socks. Please drop off donations at St. Charles Hall lobby, CUBE lobby, or the Nursing Office (415 Simperman). Thank you for your kindness!
