2023 PNW ASCE Symposium

2023 PNW ASCE Symposium

Carroll students involved in the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student Chapter co-hosted and participated in the annual Pacific Northwest ASCE Symposium this April. Every 15 years (give or take), Carroll has the opportunity to co-host the annual Student ASCE Symposium. The event took place at MSU Bozeman and was a huge success. Ethan Mancini (senior) and Professor Gary Fischer were in charge of the Steel Bridge competition, in which student teams develop a scale-model steel bridge. The team must determine how to fabricate their bridge, efficiently assemble it under timed construction, and then load test the bridge. The bridge must span approximately 20 feet, carry 2,500 pounds, and must meet all other specifications of the competition rules. Bridge aesthetics are also judged and considered in the final results of the competition. Months of planning are required to host this event and we want to thank Ethan and Professor Fischer for representing Carroll with their time and efforts!

The Carroll students also participated in the Concrete Canoe competition – a favorite competition among the 15 participating schools. Participating in this competition is no small task! It involves canoe design, concrete mix design and testing, mold construction and casting, and decorating. At the symposium, canoes that arrived in Bozeman were presented to a panel of judges before hitting the water for swamp testing and racing. David Wassmuth (Carroll's concrete canoe captain), Martha Schwarz, and Chloe Gallagher (all juniors) led the efforts to design and build the canoe named "Mountain Mama." Mountain Mama was beautiful and buoyant! The men's team took 2nd in their races and the canoe was awarded 3rd in the aesthetics competition! Great job, Saints!

I have been looking forward to in-person symposiums since my freshman year and I am glad to say that the one we co-hosted definitely lived up to my expectations. I greatly enjoyed spending time with my team and getting to know people from other schools. The comradery that conferences build is like no other. I made some good friends and learned a lot from the experience. The highlight of the weekend though was when our men's canoe team crushed UW in the final race.
