Hailey Kellum from Roundup, Mont., is a senior political science major, minoring in international relations and constitutional studies, who recently returned from a two-week fellowship in Rome.
Hailey was chosen to participate in the winter term of the Lex Fellowship, a pre-law focused study abroad for undergraduate students. The Lex Fellowship hosts programs in Madrid, London, Paris, and Rome for students interested in the legal field. The fellowships are two weeks long and offer opportunities for fellows to visit international law firms and work on and discuss real cases pertaining to all fields of law including corporate law, environmental law, and family law. Aside from gaining professional experience and meeting lawyers from around the globe, Lex Fellows are guided by legal advisors (2L and 3L law school students from the United States) throughout their fellowship and receive personalized advice on the law school admissions and
“During my time as a Lex Fellow, I lived in a central part of Rome with four other fellows. Each day, we were assigned a case file to read and we visited law firms in and around Rome. I particularly enjoyed working for an international firm, Tonucci and Partners, learning about immigration law and refugee status in the midst of the current refugee crisis in Italy. In Rome, I was always able to look forward to an amazing Italian dinner provided by the Lex Fellowship and sightseeing on the weekends in one of the world's most historical cities. The Lex Fellowship was truly an unforgettable experience that will help me academically and professionally as I pursue a career in law.”
In applying for the fellowship, Hailey found plenty of assistance available to her through the staff and faculty at Carroll. “I found the Lex Fellowship from their advertisements on Instagram and applied with the help of Cheri Long and my advisor, Dr. Parsons. Wes Feist also gave me some great interview advice for the series of video interviews I completed prior to being awarded the fellowship!”
