Participants will need lodging for the Carroll College portion of the seminar for July 5-18 and July 23. In order to foster an environment of collaboration and collegiality, seminar participants are strongly encouraged to reside on the Carroll College campus.

Accommodations are available in Trinity Hall, which has suites with four private bedrooms, a shared kitchen, and a shared bath. The room rates in Trinity Hall are $xx per day for each bedroom. Trinity Hall has coin-operated laundry facilities, and there is a one-time charge of $xx for those who may wish to have bed linens provided.

All NEH Summer Scholars will have access to Carroll College’s library. In addition to its regular resources, the library houses a computer lab. Wi-fi will be freely available on campus.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available for purchase Monday through Friday in the Carroll College dining hall. Brunch and dinner are available on Saturday and Sunday. There are grocery stores, restaurants, and other amenities within walking distance of Carroll College. Scholars should be able to tend to all necessities without a car. Parking will be available on campus for those who choose to rent or bring cars. Though not comprehensive, this Google Map identifies recommended amenities in Helena.

During our time at Yellowstone National Park (July 19-23), we will be lodging at the Yellowstone Studies Center (YSC). The YSC offers spacious common areas, a kitchen, and classroom space. Located in the town of West Yellowstone, MT, the YSC is within walking distance to a grocery store, restaurants, and other basic amenities. Bedding at the YSC is on the rustic side: cots with sleeping bags in common rooms (one for men and one for women). Participants should be prepared for modest lodging.

Lodging at YSC is reserved in advance, so all participants are required to lodge at this facility. The lodging rates at the Yellowstone Studies Center are $22.50 per day over four nights ($90.00 total). The YSC offers an unbeatable combination of location, affordability, and educational resources for our journey to Yellowstone National Park.

Helena Regional Airport (HLN) is located 10 minutes from Carroll College. Rides will be arranged for scholars arriving at HLN.  Other regional airports such as Bozeman (BZN), Great Falls (GTF), and Missoula (MSO) are within a 1-2 hour drive of Helena and often offer competitive prices and itineraries, but scholars arriving at these airports will need to rent a car to get to Helena.

Summer conditions in Montana are generally hot and dry during the day, with mild evenings. Average high temperatures during July in Helena are 83° F with lows of 52° F.

Teachers selected to participate in the seminar will receive a stipend of $2,700. Half of this amount will be disbursed at the beginning of the seminar. The remaining half will be disbursed at the end of the second week of the seminar.

Stipends are intended to defray the costs of travel to and from Helena, accommodations during the seminar, meals, books, and ordinary living expenses. Supplements will not be given in cases where the stipend is insufficient to cover all expenses.

See the Stipends & Expectations page for more information.
