Application Requirements
Admitted candidates are those who, in the view of the Admission Committee, are likely to succeed in and contribute to the Carroll College community. The Committee conducts a comprehensive review when evaluating and determining the admissibility of candidates. In all cases, the underlying principle of comprehensive review for admission consideration is the assessment of preparedness, potential and purpose. The process is one that weighs heavily the candidate’s past academic performance with the greatest emphasis placed upon the candidate’s grades and the quality of academic preparation (curriculum).
Admitted candidates will demonstrate a strong academic background. Carroll does not have established quotas or standardized admission requirements. Decisions are based on a student’s academic performance during high school, verbal and quantitative reasoning skills, letter of recommendation, demonstrated commitment to intellectual achievement, and performance on standardized college entrance examinations. In the case of transfer applicants, collegiate level work previously completed is considered.
Freshman Admission
Freshman applicants are strongly encouraged to follow a college preparatory curriculum. While such a curriculum is recommended, it is not required in order for a student to be considered for admission to Carroll College. The following is a recommended curriculum schedule for four years of high school:
- English – 4 years
- Mathematics – 3 years, including Algebra II
- Social Studies – 3 years, including U.S. History and U.S. Government
- Science – 2 years, including one lab science
- Foreign Language – 2 years
- Fine Arts (music, art, theatre) – 2 years
- Technology – 1 year
In addition to coursework, standardized test scores may also be a component of the admission decision.
NOTE: Carroll College is test optional however, students are required to submit an ACT or SAT score if:
- the student's unweighted academic GPA is below 2.85
- the student is homeschooled or attends a school that does not provide letter grades
- the student wishes to compete in intercollegiate athletics (not required at time of application)
SAT or ACT scores may be sent directly from the testing agency, either the College Board or ACT or they may be included on the student's official high school transcript. Carroll College's SAT code is: 4041 and ACT code is: 2408.
Transfer Student Admission
Carroll welcomes applications from students whose educational interest will be served by transferring from two- or four-year colleges. Students are considered transfer candidates if they have attempted college level course work from a regionally accredited college or university following their high school graduation. (Students with college level credit from concurrent enrollment programs such as running start, are still considered first-year students)
Admitted candidates are those who, in the view of the Admission Committee, are likely to become successful members of the Carroll community and demonstrate a strong academic background. For that reason, a selective admission policy is practiced. Transfer students should have a minimum 2.50 overall college grade point average (4.0 scale) to be considered for admission.
International Student Admission
All international applicants whose native language is not English and who choose not to provide ACT or SAT exam results are required to submit official results for the Test of English as A Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
The minimum TOEFL score required for admission consideration is 550 (paper), 213 (computer) or 80 (iBT). Applicants intending to pursue studies in engineering, biology or nursing are required to have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper), 250 (computer) and 100 (iBT). The minimum IELTS score required for admission consideration is 6.5. Applicants intending to pursue studies in engineering, biology or nursing are required to have a minimum IELTS score of 7.5. Information regarding the IELTS exam may be found at www.ielts.org/.
All international applicants who require a U.S. immigration Form I-20 must complete and return the International Student Financial Certificate. The certificate must be accompanied by financial documentation which verifies that funding is available to cover all estimated expenses for one year of study. Documentation must be provided on official bank or other financial institution letterhead stationery with a bank official’s signature and seal/stamp. A photocopy of this documentation is not acceptable.
If you are already studying in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 visa, please contact our international office to request a transfer form to request a release of your Form I-20 or DS-2019 for your current institution to Carroll College. Once the required forms have been received, we will issue your I-20 and provide you with instructions on how to apply for your student visa.
