POSITION TITLE:  Group Fitness Instructor

DEFINITION:  The Group Exercise Instructor works in the following areas: (a) exercise leadership (b) practical concepts teaching muscular strength and endurance, and all formats of aerobic conditioning for group populations (Yoga, Boot Camp, Full Body Conditioning, Spinning, Pilates, Dance, etc.) in a Group Exercise program setting. The instructor will teach two ~1 hour long classes per week in the Hunthausen Activity Center. $25 per class *negotiable by contract.


  1. To educate and instruct participants incorporating safe and sound physiological principles, for the purpose of improving cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and body composition.
  2. Be able to cue and instruct participants in the proper technique and safety for a group exercise class, including:
  • Cardio/Aerobics Segment
  • Stretching/Flexibility and/or Strength Training
  • Cool Down
  1. Be familiar with proper posture, correct alignment, exercise selection, supervision, cueing, and motivational techniques
  2. To teach and emphasize the 5 components of fitness: Flexibility, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, and Body Composition.


  1. Professional certification(s) REQUIRED for all Group Exercise Instructors. Prior teaching experience is a plus!
  2. Work Ethic
  • Must be able to work well with supervisors, employees, and participants
  • Personable, approachable, (not shy), helpful and energetic.
  • Teachable, dependable and highly motivated to carry out orders and work hard.
  • Well-rounded team player willing to help out with substitutions and special events.
  1. Good physical shape (practice what he/she preaches).
  2. Good communication skills.


  1. Certifications in CPR and First Aid
  2. Group Exercise Instructors must be certified by AFAA, ACE, or other recognized national certifying agency prior to auditioning.
