External Candidates

External Candidates: Non-Employees of SCL Health-Montana Region: St. Vincent Healthcare:

  • Non-employees of St. Vincent’s Healthcare or external candidates are welcome to apply for acceptance into the Critical Care Specialty Courses.
  • The applicant must be a registered nurse with a current unencumbered Montana RN license and current BLS certification.
  • Acceptance into the courses will be determined after a thorough review of the application and an interview process.

Financial Support Provided by SCL-Health:

  • Following the interview process, all candidates accepted into the program (named Residents after being accepted) will be offered a full-time RN position within the Education Department.
  • All tuition is paid for by St. Vincent's Health and the Resident will receive a full-time salary and benefits while completing the Introduction to Critical Care Course.
  • Travel expenses to/from Carroll College for attendance at the weekend intensives will be reimbursed by St. Vincent’s Healthcare.

After the Course is Successfully Completed:

  • At the successful completion of the course:
    • All external candidate students are expected to contract with St. Vincent’s Healthcare in Billings, Montana for a 2-year work commitment, if a nursing position is offered and accepted.
    • After successful completion of the course, the Resident will be moved into a full-time position in the ICU or ED, unless there is no RN position available or based on the unit skill-mix required, then the Resident may be placed in the Critical Care Float pool.
    • Please note that residents may be moved into RN positions within the individual departments (ICU, Cath Lab, PACU, and ED) based on availability and unit need, therefore, completion of the ICU-Track does not guarantee a position in the ICU or completion of the ED-Track does not guarantee a position in the ED.

  • Student costs are estimated to include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Current up-to-date immunizations to be provided.
    • Full-time housing/residence in Billings to fulfill clinical hours.
