Faith & Reason Lecture: Dr. Jessica Coblentz

Faith and Reason Lecture

02/02/2023 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Carroll College's Annual Faith and Reason Lecture: Dr. Jessica Coblentz, PhD presents Depression as a Wilderness Experience: Some Theological Resources for Life with Depression. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Brought to you by Carroll College Academic Affairs, Theology Dept., and the Sister Annette Moran Center.

Lecture Abstract

Depression, like other forms of suffering, frequently engenders disorientation and difficult questions: What is happening? Why is this happening? And what is one to do amid such pain? Depression sufferers and those who accompany them sometimes turn to faith communities for answers, and though some find solace in the theological and practical responses they receive, many Christians are left searching. Coblentz’s book Dust in the Blood: A Theology of Life with Depression (Liturgical Press) adds to the Christian theological resources available to depression sufferers and those who accompany them. This lecture will introduce one such resource—an understanding of depression as a wilderness experience—and explore its implications for Christian interpretations of and responses to life with depression.

About Jessica Coblentz, PhD

Jessica Coblentz, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Theology at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, where her research and teaching focuses on Catholic systematic theology, feminist theologies, and mental health in theological perspective.

"ON BEHALF OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS JENNINGS ESTATE:

  • One family on the cutting edge of innovation.
  • Another poised to hunt for greatness in spite of hardship.
  • A unity to intertwine those trajectories by lineage and blood.

We hope you will join us for a night of revelries as we celebrate the engagement of Morgan Jennings and Sam Pryor, alongside their friends and loved ones, in an evening that will be sure to be truly unforgettable. In-family rivalry? Mysterious fatalities? An elevator operator named… ELEVATOR OPERATOR?!? When the first body drops, who will be blamed? And can you figure out who the killer is before it's too late?

Lecture: How Did We Get Here?

Lecture: How Did We Get Here? Planet

02/21/2023 - 6:30pm to 7:45pm

Hosted by Merlin CCC, Carroll College professor Dr. Kelly Cline presents "How Did We Get Here?: Planet" on February 21 at 6:30 p.m.

In this installment of Merlin’s “How Did We Get Here?” series, we’ll consider the intellectual history of the idea of “planet” with mathematician, physicist, and astrophysicist Kelly Cline. We'll start with the ancient Greeks, move to Copernicus, and then sashay into the 20th century. Along the way, we'll learn about how scientific words and their definitions serve as a specific lens through which we can view the world. By scientifically defining words so that they most closely match real categories that exist in physical reality, this makes it easier for us to understand, investigate, and make sense of the universe. As such, this installment of HDWGH and the evolution of how we understand and use the word planet will give us important insights into the nature of science and the foundations of our modern civilization.

Free and open to the community.

Lenten Faculty & Staff Prayer Study
02/27/2023 - 12:00pm to 12:45pm

We in Campus Ministry would like to invite any staff or faculty who are interested to gather in faith during the Lenten season for a weekly Christian prayer group based on the short book, Searching For and Maintaining Peace: A Small Treatise on Peace of Heart, by Fr. Jacques Philippe.

All staff and faculty are welcome. Please RSVP. We have 10 copies available for free, and anyone else who wants to join can buy their own copy. These gatherings will start on February 27th and go through April 3rd. We'll meet during lunch on Mondays in the Campus Ministry lounge (below All Saints Chapel), and go from noon to 12:45. If the lounge area is not large enough, then another space will be added and multiple small groups will be formed. No gathering would be held during Spring Break.

This is an opportunity to come together to pray and share life in Christ as professionals here at Carroll. We will share our thoughts on the readings each week, and pray with and for each other. Bring your own lunch. Please grab the book and read the Preface and Part I before the first gathering on February 27th.

Schedule:
February 27 - Preface & Part I
March 6 - Part II:1-6
March 20 - Part II:7-13
March 27 - Part II: 14-18
April 3 - Part III

If you are interested, please RSVP with Campus Ministers Chris Yakawich (cyakawich@carroll.edu) or Deidre Casey (dlcasey@carroll.edu).

Film: Best Last Place

Best Last Place Film Graphic

02/28/2023 - 12:30pm to 2:00pm

On February 28, 2023 from 12:30 to 2 PM we will have a viewing of the Montana PBS documentary, Best Last Place in the Simperman Hall Auditorium Wiegand theater.

After we have the viewing there will be a question and answer session with the filmmaker, Jim Jenner and Father Patrick Beretta.

About Best Last Place

A sequel to the international award-winning “Saving the Burg”, which documented the 30-year comeback of Philipsburg, MT.  This new work from Director Jim Jenner captures the irony of a frightening virus-spawned economic shutdown being followed by unprecedented waves of pandemic and political “refugees” into Montana.   Interviews include dozens of people who experienced the changes wrought when Covid closures then added rocket fuel to remote digital work access and inbound migration to rural communities.    Unprecedented real estate price spikes, once-in-a-century building booms, evaporating workforce housing and busier highways are new realities in the Rockies.  How Montana communities deal with these challenges shows that saving our legendary “Last Best” culture is now very much a work in progress.

Jim Jenner Bio:

Director Jim Jenner, 73,  is a fifth-generation Westerner who began his media career at 18 as a writer for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.  He later joined CBS News there and worked throughout Asia, including appearing, at 21, on the Cronkite Evening News reporting stories during the civil war in East Pakistan.  He then worked in New York with the CBS News Special Events Unit covering the 1972 Presidential elections and the final Apollo moon landings.  Jim returned to the Northwest and in 1975 founded Pacific Communications, [PACCOM] a television advertising and production company that grew to 60 employees before he sold it to what is now Comcast in the early ‘90’s.  Following the sale Jim began creating documentaries including two award-winning films on Route 66, instructional films and, following a childhood interest, over a dozen films on pigeons and pigeon racing.  An lifelong fly fisherman Jim first visited Philipsburg, Montana in the 1970’s and returned there in 1991 and bought several properties.  He created Philipsburg’s historic Broadway Hotel in one of them in 2003 and used Montana as a base for documentary film work in both Europe and China.   Prior to Philipsburg’s 150th Sesquicentennial in 2017 Jim was asked by the local Arts Fund to create a documentary on the historic mining town’s noteworthy comeback.  “Saving the Burg” aired more than a dozen times on PBS and won a top award at the 2019 UN “Better Cities” international film festival in Dubai.  The film’s follow-up, “The Best Last Place”, was created over the next three years and premiered on PBS in November of 2022.  Jim and his wife Tori live in Philipsburg and remain active in community groups.
