Eric Sullivan Memorial Ceremony

Dr. Eric Sullivan Photo

01/22/2023 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Our dear friend and colleague Dr. Eric Sullivan passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023 after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Eric started teaching at Carroll in the Department of Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics in 2013. He was a treasured teacher, scholar, and colleague. Eric accomplished much in his time at Carroll. He was instrumental in the development of the Data Science program, he wrote and published a mathematics textbook, he championed the Student Undergraduate Research Festival (SURF), and he received the Carroll College Outstanding Teaching Award in May of 2022. He also provided public education opportunities through popular lectures and debates. See memories of Dr. Sullivan here.

Memorial Ceremony - Sunday, January 22

Please join Eric's family to celebrate a life well lived on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023 at 3:00 pm in the All Saints Hall of the Lower Campus Center.

The memorial ceremony will be about 30 minutes long followed by ample time for family and friends to socialize and share memories of Eric with one another. There will be several types of beverages (including some of Eric's favorites) and light hors d'oeuvres.

All are welcome. The celebration will be live-streamed and recorded, and links will be shared as we get closer to Sunday's celebration. Instead of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dr. Eric Sullivan Data Science Fund(link is external) that will honor Eric’s legacy.

Data Science/Bio: Circadian Rhythms

Data Science/Bio: Circadian Rhythms graphic

01/24/2023 - 12:30pm to 2:00pm

Join the Data Science and Biology Departments for the talk "Circadian Rhythms:  A Window into the Brain" from Dr. Christina Reynolds, Ph.D., on Tuesday 1/24 in SH114 at 12:30pm. Pizza will be provided!

About the talk

The circadian rhythm is a 24-hour internal clock that cycles us between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals. Changes in circadian rhythms can signal the onset of neurological disease, especially conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. Using technology developed at the Oregon Center for Technology and Aging, it is possible to capture the strength of circadian rhythms using unobtrusive methods over long periods of time. The data collected from these sensors and circadian rhythm analysis offers important insights into patient health without requiring expensive or inconvenient testing procedures.

For the past seven years, Dr. Reynolds has been working for the neurology Department of Oregon Health and Science University, as a data scientist studying the neuroscience of sleep.

01/27/2023 - 6:30pm to 01/29/2023 - 1:00pm

Men's and Women's retreats will happen January 27-29, 2023. Buses will depart from the Cube on Friday, 1/27 after dinner and return by 1:00 on Sunday. The guys are at Legendary Lodge and the ladies at Camp Utmost. Signups should open for these awesome retreats on December 1, 2022.

REGISTER HERE

These retreats are a great opportunity for men and women to gather in an amazing place to discuss how we can grow closer to God together.

We have all sorts of fun lined up for the weekend, and we know that together with the beauty of the surroundings, and the great hearts that we have on campus, this retreat is ripe for some serious movement of the Spirit.

We will be taking time to hike and play in the snow, discuss and reflect on specific topics pertinent to being men and women of Christ, and just having a grande ole' time. Make sure that you spread the word, because this year's retreats are going to be awesome!

Because the weather may be questionable, and we will be enjoying the outdoors to the fullest, we strongly encourage you to come prepared for all types of weather. That means winter boots, warm coats, snow pants, hats, mittens, scarves, warm sleeping bags, and cardigans...but seriously, dress warmer than you ever have. If there is any equipment you don't have (ie boots, warm sleeping bag) let us know and we will be on the lookout to try and find you some.
