House Party 101: Helena/ Carroll Regulations & Contributing Positively to Carroll's Culture

Come on down to the Lower Cube on Tuesday, February 22 at 6:30 p.m. and learn about Carroll and Helena rules & regulations about house gatherings, as well as ask any questions you may have. Representatives from Carroll admin and the Helena PD will provide short presentations on their policies, as well as a student who has experience hosting safe, legal, and fun events at their home. This event will be panel-style, so after the presentations, there will be time for students to ask any questions they may have. There will also be conversations about preventing drinking and driving, what Carroll is doing to ensure students have a safe ride home, as well as general tips about finding a sober ride.

Additionally, the event will address sexual assault prevention, how to improve Carroll's culture, and ways to intervene if needed. In general, this event will serve as a place for students to come with their questions and open minds, both to learn about safe practices and to contribute positively to Carroll's culture.

If there are any questions about the event and how to advertise it, email Ellie Sievertsen at esievertsen@carroll.edu or Dean of Students Annette Walstad at awalstad@carroll.edu.

Bishop Vetter LGBTQ Listening Session

Bishop Vetter photo

02/23/2022 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

At the request of Pope Francis and Bishop Vetter, a unique opportunity is upcoming.  In brief: as part of a special Church structure called a synod, Bishop Vetter is coming to campus to listen to experiences centering on LGBTQ issues and to answer questions related to these issues.  This meeting will take place on Feb. 23 @ 7pm in the Siena Ross rooms of the lower Cube.  All Carroll community members are welcome to participate.  The event will not be open to the larger Helena community.

What follows is a more fulsome explanation of this endeavor:

What is a Synod?
The word “synod” is Greek in origin.  It can be translated as “assembly” or “meeting”.  Broken down etymologically it means “journeying together”.  The Catholic Church has a long history of calling synods to discuss various issues of relevance to the Church and the world.  In recent times, Pope Francis has called synods on family life (2016), on youth (2019), and on the Amazon (2020).  This year he is calling for a Synod on Synodality (which, yes, is linguistically very circular).  In simple terms, the Pope is asking the Catholic Church throughout the world to discuss how the Church can journey together with its own members and with the world at large.

What does this Synod consist of?
At the diocesan level, the synod will center on listening sessions.  Bishop Vetter will go throughout the diocese and meet with various groups of people (both those in the Church and those not connected to the Church) to listen to what they say about how the Catholic Church is currently accompanying them and how the Church can better accompany them.

There will be a special emphasis on listening to groups that are often considered marginalized or “on the peripheries” as Pope Francis has said.  With that in mind, on Feb. 23rd @ 7pm, Bishop Vetter will be at Carroll to conduct a listening session regarding concerns about LGBTQ issues followed by a time of question and answer with him.  All perspectives on these issues will be welcome.

What Will Take Place?
After Bishop leads a brief invocation for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the floor will be open for individuals to share their thoughts and experiences regarding LGBTQ issues with him.  People can also submit responses to questions anonymously via this google form: Questions for Bishop Vetter.  For clarity’s sake, Bishop’s time with us will be split into 2 parts: the first will be more centered on listening.  In the second part of the evening, Bishop Vetter will answer questions that people may have.

Who May Attend?
This session is open to all members of the Carroll community (students, staff, faculty, and administration) but not to the general public.  Here is a zoom link for those who cannot be there in person. Time With Bishop Vetter

Campus Ministry has a group of students who live in the residence halls called Peer Ministers. These peer ministers carry on the tradition of fostering fellowship and goodwill on campus, work in building community on the floors, and help in creating a positive campus atmosphere for students.

Each Peer Minister considers themself a resource to assist and counsel other students when needed. They also lead Bible studies, but these may not always take the “customary” form.

Most importantly, though, these students are available to be a presence encouraging faith on campus. Peer Ministers encourage students to make their relationship with God an important part of their journey at Carroll.

Carroll Theatre presents The Hijabis by Rohina Malik.

Runs February 17-27, 2022. Best friends Maya, Nadia and Leen are doing their best to live their mid-20s dreams in the small town of Payneville, Illinois.  And while life after college isn’t what any of them expected, they remain united in their struggles by their love for ice cream, their penchant for laughter, and their commitment to wearing their hijabs as a reflection of their faithfulness to God. But when their local mosque is desecrated by other members of the Payneville community, how they choose to respond will change the course of their lives. Associate Professor Kim Shire will direct. This production is part of a series of plays commissioned by Big Bridge Theatre Consortium on the topic of interfaith dialogue. In-person tickets | Online Tickets
