Brian Barrett: The Church as Sacrament

CATH 189 Images of the Church Lecture Series graphic

10/25/2021 - 5:30pm to 7:00pm

Dr. Brian Barrett will be in the Fortin Scola on Monday, Oct 25, 2021 for a talk and Q&A on "The Church as Sacrament" starting at 5:30 p.m. We'll meet to eat together in the STAC at 5:00 p.m.

Everyone invited! A part of CATH 189: Images of the Church.

Catholic Studies: CATH 189

The Catholic Studies course CATH 189 is a series of Fall-semester courses under the theme of “Catholic Thought and Culture.” Iterations of CATH 189 will treat different subjects, such as a doctrine, person, historical or cultural moment, etc., relevant to the overarching theme of Catholic Thought and Culture.

The aim of this course series is to introduce inquiring students (especially freshmen) to aspects of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition in the context of the Catholic Studies community of students and instructors. We hope to give students a taste of the content and mode of learning in Catholic Studies.

Note: Even if you are not a part of the CATH 189 roster, you can still attend all or any of the gatherings.

Fall 2021

The subject this Fall is “Images of the Church.” The specific aim of this subject is to contemplate together from a variety of angles the mystery of the Church. It is inspired by Lumen Gentium, CCC 751-810, and Pope Francis’ Wednesday audiences of 2013 (beginning May 29). Speakers present an image of the Church in historical and cultural context, utilizing a saint, pope, order, movement, et al., in the history of the Church, who reflected upon and taught the Church about itself through the particular image.  Students will thus learn about dialogical moments between a concrete situation in the life of the Church and a figure who employs an image of the Church to help read and respond to “signs of the times.”

Structure

  • Monday evenings 5-7 p.m.
    • 5:00 discussion over dinner (either the STAC or Scola, check schedule)
    • 5:30 speaker and Q&A
    • 6:30 small group discussions
    • 6:50 wrap up
