Kim speaks internationally about the love and freedom she has found in her life. Part of Kim’s story (but not all!) is her learning how to live with same-sex attraction within the teachings of the Catholic Church. More of her story is how Jesus heals the human heart and through that healing opens up a life full of generous joy and purpose. Kim loves people and strives to be totally transparent in order to help others know they are safe to do the same. When she is not in Southern California, she is most likely found in her 'home away from home', Ethiopia, surrounded by the 280+ children she has come to know and love through her ministry called “Unforgotten Faces”. This is a great opportunity to hear an authentic, courageous, and loving woman of faith share her story and Christ’s healing love. Come if you can! Carroll Campus Hunthausen Activity Center 750 Great Northern Blvd Helena, MT 59601 United States7:00pm SURF Keynote: Dr. Bridget Kevane 04/22/2021 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm We kicked off our 2021 Digital SURF Event with a keynote address titled "The Cloister and the Trailer Park: How My Research Became Transformative" on the evening of Thursday, April 22, 2021, by Dr. Bridget Kevane, director of Liberal Studies at Montana State University. About the Keynote AddressHow do we get from the cloister to the trailer park? From contemplation to engagement? My talk will explore how literature, specifically Latin American and Latino literature, shaped my professional life and how the limits of academia led me to the trailer parks. There is often a deep disconnect between the study of literary texts and the politics of the real world. This talk hopes to describe how and where social engagement and the humanities converge to deepen our understanding of community. About Dr. Bridget KevaneBridget Kevane is a professor of Latino/a/x Studies at Montana State University. She teaches courses on the history, politics, and identity of Latinos in the United States and has published widely in the field. Bridget has long been active in Gallatin County working to create better services for the Latino population. She is a regular Montana Humanities speaker on Latinos in Montana. In partnership with Community Health Partners, she received an INBRE and Montana Health Care Foundation grant to train and mentor Latina women in Gallatin County as health advocates for their families and community. In 2019, she led students to the Arizona border where they worked with non-profits to assist migrants crossing over. More recently, she received a grant to create a English Learner summer camp for newcomer arrivals to the county. About the Student Undergraduate Research FestivalThe Student Undergraduate Research Festival (SURF) is a celebration of the research done by Carroll College students. The event occurs every April, and everyone is invited to attend. SURF is seen as the highlight of the year for all of the students doing research, and it is a wonderful opportunity for other Carroll students, Carroll faculty and staff members, and community members to see the amazing work done by our students. Online | 9:00am Student Undergraduate Research Festival (SURF) 04/23/2021 - 9:00am to 4:00pm The Student Undergraduate Research Festival (SURF) is an annual celebration of Carroll College students’ research. The presentations and posters presented throughout the day represent the culmination of months, and in some cases, years of dedicated work and research on behalf of the students. Entering its tenth year, SURF has grown from a several hour event primarily focused on the sciences to one in which over 140 posters and presentations highlight the diversity of student-driven, inquiry-oriented research being undertaken in a variety of disciplines at Carroll. More details on the festival including the program and full list of SURF participants can be found on the Student Undergraduate Research Festival webpage of the Carroll website. Online 5:00pm Saints Against Racism Book Giveaway 04/23/2021 - 5:00pm to 7:00pm Saints Against Racism Student Entries:
Overcoming racial injustice and building genuine equality is a long-term struggle and requires that we all pull together in both large and small ways. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force convened by President Cech wants to recognize and celebrate the anti-racist work that happens day-to-day on our campus. And!... we have free books to give away to you all (summer reading anyone?). The Hate u Give is a bestselling novel by Angie Thomas (and a film by the same name) and So You Want to Talk About Race is a book by Ijeoma Oluo exploring and explaining the dynamics of race and racism in American life. Here's how it works:Send us a copy of (or link to) any essay, artwork, podcast, creative writing, poem, video, musical composition, or course assignment that works in some way to understand or overcome racial injustice. There's nothing too big or small to qualify! Send these via email to Prof. Meyer (emeyer@carroll.edu) with "Saints Against Racism" in the Subject line by April 23rd. In the email, be sure to include your name and a title for the work. That's it! Invite your friends and classmates to submit their work if you know they've done this kind of work this year. We will collect the anti-racist work you all have done on campus this semester and enter each student who submits work into a drawing for the free books (ten of them). Winning students will be notified and can collect their books in the last week of class. Then, we will celebrate and recognize Carroll student's anti-racist work by listing student names and the titles on the college's webpage. We won't share the content of your work publicly (beyond the title) without asking directly for your permission. Thanks to Montana Book Co. on the gulch for contributing to this project.
