Math & Data Science Colloquium

Math Data Science Colloquium Image

10/24/2019 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Join us for a Math and Data Science Colloquium Presentation: "Leveraging Statistical Computing and Deep Learning to Answer Environmental Questions" with Dr. Scott Morford, a scientist at Terra Analytics here in Helena.

All are invited.

More about the Presentation:

Title:
New Approaches to Environmental Monitoring using Satellites, Drones, and Machine Learning

Presenter:
Scott Morford, Ph.D. – Terra Analytics, Helena MT.

Abstract:
Advances in sensors, computational power, and statistical learning are poised to change how we do most environmental monitoring. Remote sensing data from satellites and UAVs (drones), in combination with field measures, can be used in conjunction to perform inventory and monitoring tasks. New statistical tools like deep learning allow us to automate much of this work, providing efficient methods to implement monitoring at spatial scales that were not possible even a few years ago. Here, I will discuss these advances and show how new tools, such as convolutional neural networks, are being applied to answer a diverse set of environmental questions. This presentation will share a series of case studies geared to a general audience, highlighting tasks such as wildlife census counts, rangeland monitoring, and forest change detection. I will also address some of the challenges to applying these tools in rigorous scientific frameworks and discuss how non-computer scientists can start using these emerging technologies.
