Professional mental health speaker, author, thought leader, trusted advisor to international business executives, Carol Kivler is also a passionate advocate for mental health. A survivor of four bouts of treatment-resistant depression, she battled this devastating and debilitating mental illness with courage and faith to a full and sustained recovery.

Carol is an ardent mental health advocate for consumers struggling with depression and mental illness. Through her four books, mental health presentations and Courageous Recovery, Inc., her 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, Carol works tirelessly to overcome stigma and misrepresentations that still surround those suffering from mental illnesses. As a consumer advocate and mental wellness speaker, she tells the story of the treatment that saved her life, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and shares strategies for maintaining sustained recovery and mental wellness. In December of 2018, the Lewis & Clark County Health Department released the Community Health Report – Healthy Together.  This report is issued every three years and it is a synopsis of the public health status of the residents in Lewis & Clark County.  In 2018, 700 residents in Lewis & Clark County responded to a series of question related to the health of the citizens in Lewis & Clark County.

Some of the results were:

  • 74.5% of responders identified mental health as the most important health concern in Lewis and Clark County.
  • 24.8% of county residents have been diagnosed with depression.  That is 1 in 4.  The national average is 1 in 5.
  • The suicide rate in Lewis & Clark County is twice the national average.  Most who commit suicide are middle aged menwho use firearms as lethal means.
