Step on campus and you are sure to see a lot of activity in terms of renovations, remodels, and new and improved places and spaces. Carroll and their building partners have been busy with the Hunthausen Activity Center, the new chapel, remodeling the ground floor of St. Charles, designing a new theatre, and creating new and improved classrooms and learning labs, such as the new Makerspace in St. Charles where a 3D printer provides students the opportunity to create, build and imagine.

IMPACT CallersCarroll's On the Line

September 12th marks the kick-off date for Carroll College’s IMPACT fall phonathon. Our students are excited to start calling Carroll alums and share all the compelling things happening at Carroll. We hope you will join with other Carroll alumni and friends to create a better future by investing in a Carroll education.

As I call Carroll alumni, I love hearing that there are other people out there who love Carroll as much as I do. Every call I make I enjoy connecting with people from all walks of life who are part of the Carroll community. Supportive alumni are one of the pillars that keeps Carroll standing tall, and I speak for all Carroll students when I express our immense gratitude for your support. I’m looking forward to another year filled with great conversations and giving all alums the opportunity to positively affect Carroll students through the IMPACT Annual Fund.

Saints in the News

Anthrozoology studentsTwo of Carroll’s Anthrozoology students plus the Helena Kennel Club helped Vashti Teders, a special education teacher from Radley Elementary School, make a vision a reality through Governor, Radley’s “facility dog.”

Governor’s presence helps calm anxious or upset children. “Some children used to take 45 minutes or longer to calm down but Governor can do it within about 5 minutes. It is phenomenal to watch. He has an innate ability to comfort people," said Teders.

“It’s been a great experience,” she added. “He’s been here since he was 10 weeks old. He loves coming to work. He’s probably the most excited employee here.”

In his lecture titled, “The Anti-Federal Appropriation,” Professor Tulis will explain how Anti-Federalists — those who originally opposed the U.S. Constitution — and their heirs "have exploited the iterative character of The Federalist to gain through interpretation what they lost in ratification of the Constitution regarding federalism, separation of powers, and executive power.”
All students, faculty, staff, and members of the community are invited to attend. This lecture is the first in a series of events designed to bring heightened attention to the tradition of constitutional government.

Carroll College and NAMI Helena are bringing Amanda Lipp, 24, to campus to speak about mental illness. Since age 19, Amanda has given over 150 speeches around the country regarding mental and behavioral health. Her messages come from a place of passion from experiencing psychiatric hospitalization her freshman year of college, to consulting professionally in mental health care and serving on national boards. Her messages intersect with her passion for film and the fine arts, tapping into creativity as mechanisms to support individuals and communities. This event is free and the Helena community is invited to attend.

Capital Punishment, Catholicism, and Pope Francis, Sept. 29, 7 p.m., Lower Campus Center, Carroll College
Liturgy and God’s Justice for All: Capital Punishment, Catholicism, and Pope Francis with Tobias Wright is sponsored by the Carroll College Theology Department, Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice, Archbishop Hunthausen Professor for Peace and Justice, and Dr. James and Joan Schneller Endowed Professorship in Catholic Mission and Identity.
Pope Francis's support for the abolition of capital punishment and his call for a worldwide moratorium on executions during this Holy Year of Mercy have generated questions about current Catholic teaching on the death penalty. This presentation gives attention to the history of Catholic teaching about capital punishment, including how Scripture has been interpreted in connection with it, and it describes recent developments from Pope Saint John Paul II, through Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, to Pope Francis.
Tobias Wright is a former correctional officer and reserve police officer who has also served as an ethics instructor for police officers. He is a Catholic moral theologian whose research and teaching addresses violence-related issues, environmental issues, and healthcare issues. He is the Maeder Endowed Associate Professor of Health Care Ethics and an Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Saint Louis University. This lecture is free and open to the public.

The Science of Synthetic Diamonds with Dr. Kelly Cline, Oct 13, 7 p.m., 101/202 Simperman/Wiegand Amphitheatre, Carroll College
Diamonds are some of the most valuable objects on Earth and are the hardest known substance, but they are made of ordinary carbon atoms, just like piece of a charcoal or your graphite pencil lead.  To be a diamond, those carbon atoms have to be arranged into a very special crystal structure.  For a century people all over the world tried to discover the secrets of how to turn cheap carbon into real diamonds.  Finally, in the mid-20th century this mystery was solved, and today creating diamonds is a major industry.  Why are diamonds so hard to make?  How exactly can we create diamonds?  How are diamond synthesis technologies revolutionizing our modern technology?  Join Dr. Cline for an exciting discussion of the science behind synthetic diamonds. This event is free and open to the public.
