A Bevy of Bikes

Carroll Adventure and Mountaineering Program (CAMP) has a whole new reason to hit the trails these days. Thanks to a $25,000 gift from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana, the program was able to purchase 11 mountain bikes from locally-owned businesses Great Divide Cyclery and Big Sky Cycling and Fitness.

“We’re always committed to investing in the communities we serve, and this is a unique way to do that, all while supporting Carroll College and the local economy,” BCBSMT spokesperson Jesse Zentz said. “We hope this helps Carroll students take advantage of the amazing mountain biking opportunities Helena has to offer. It’s a great way to have fun and shed some calories.”

The idea developed during a chance meeting of CAMP director Bradley Maddock and BCBSMT public relations director John Doran, when the two were taking part in the filming of a promotional video touting the mountain biking scene in Helena.

“In the past, we’ve had a mountain bike program where we take students out mountain biking, but one of the biggest hurdles that we’ve had is that many students don’t have mountain bikes," Maddock said. "So it’s hard for us to take them out and introduce them to the sport. This is going to be huge for Carroll to get the students into it and give them the ability to come out and learn about mountain biking.”

After working closely with Great Divide and Big Sky Cycling to maximize the number of bikes while maintaining quality, a wide range were purchased in August and delivered to Carroll College. The Specialized, Trek and Giant mountain bikes range in size, and all offer a great ride. Most are full suspension, but the selection does feature some hardtail options (front suspension only).

Thank you BCBSMT for investing in our students in such a fun and healthy way!

A number of local television stations were on hand as Carroll students took their inaugural ride on the new bikes.  View the coverage here:

Esposito Wins Duer Award

Carroll’s Leah Esposito, a two-sport All-American and 2015 1,000-meter Indoor Track and Field National Champion, can add one more honor to her already chock-full trophy case. This week the NAIA announced that Esposito is the 2015 winner of the prestigious A.O. Duer Scholarship Award.

The award recognizes scholarship, character, and citizenship by junior student-athletes in any sport. The A.O. Duer Scholarship Award is presented to just one male and one female junior student-athlete in the entire NAIA annually.

It is the third Duer Award for Carroll athletics and the second in as many years. Volleyball and Track and Field athlete Kathleen Mulligan received the award in 2014 and former Carroll football quarterback Tyler Emmert was honored with the award in 2004.

In her nomination letter, Carroll President Tom Evans spoke to her all-around excellence.

"Leah is what I consider to be the 'full package' when it comes to student-athletes," Evans wrote. "Not only has she consistently exhibited outstanding academic excellence in the classroom, she has also demonstrated her athletic skill on every track she has competed on for the past two years. She had constantly exceeded everyone's expectations – even her own."

Along with Esposito's excellence in competition, the biology major has a 4.0 GPA. She attributes her success in both to her ability to focus on the task at hand.

"When I am running, I am 100-percent focused on getting better. When I am doing school work, I am 100-percent focused on learning what I need to learn to succeed," Esposito said. "I dedicate all my energy to what I am doing at the time and I think that really helps me manage a busy schedule."

Leah is a Helena native and daughter of Carroll professor of art Ralph Esposito.

Congratulations once again Leah! Carroll is proud to call you one of our own.
