Removal of the Integrated Learning Course (ILC) requirement

Carroll Undergraduate Students, Faculty, and Advisors,

The Faculty Assembly has voted to amend the Core Curriculum requirements to remove the Integrated Learning Course (ILC) requirement.

  • An ILC course exemption will be posted for all students following the catalog year 2021.
  • The ILC course requirement will be removed from the Central Sequence requirements effective catalog year 2022.

Integrated Learning Course (ILC) courses allow students to study a topic with professors from two different disciplines. These 4-credit courses are intellectually rewarding. They teach interdisciplinary thinking skills that are needed in all fields and professions. Plus, students get the equivalent of 3 credits in each of the disciplines taught. So, a 4-credit ILC in literature and psychology, for instance, replaces a 3-credit literature course and a 3-credit psychology course.

That’s a good deal.

While we still encourage students to seek out and enroll in the ILC courses that are available, ILCs will not be a required part of the curriculum.
