A Passionate Advocate of the Arts

Portrait of Kim DeLong

As submitted by: Ed Noonan, Nancy Harper, and Chuck Driscoll

Carroll College recently lost one of our former directors of Theatre, the dynamic Kim DeLong.  Kim passed away on September 22, 2017. Kim came to Carroll in the late 80’s and rebuilt the theatre program, forming alliances with the Helena Symphony and the Civic Center (“Man of La Mancha”), and with Grandstreet Theatre (“Driving Miss Daisy’, “Private Lives”, “The Three Sisters” and others) and with the Myrna Loy. Our program developed a strong regional reputation under his guidance.  He was responsible for bringing the work of three Montana playwrights to New York to be performed Off-Broadway. The Montana Shakespeare Company began as a Carroll summer collaboration, performing works in the Helena Quarry and on and off campus.  Many graduates under his mentorship found work and careers in the world of theatre which he helped open to them. He will be greatly missed – a passionate advocate for the arts has left our midst.

As Kim was preparing to retire after 16 years at Carroll College, the Helena IR interviewed him as well as others who had been influenced by his work and teachings. Read the story from April 2005 here:  New chapter for Kim DeLong.
