All About Our Saints

Doggone Good News

In early October, Anthrozoology graduate Karin Wagemann '15 was recognized for her academic abilities, track record, work ethic, and knowledge base at the American Society of Canine Trainers conference in Bozeman. In recognition of these attributes, she was awarded a scholarship to complete her masters degree in canine behavioral science at London Hanover University in Great Britain.

Karin’s goal is to train dogs for the FBI or National Park Service, but she is willing to work for any federal agency that needs a skilled dog trainer. While taking classes at London Hanover, she will apply to the federal government beginning next year. She is simultaneously working towards trainer certification through the American Society of Canine Trainers (ASCT). She hopes to become a master trainer and instructor certified through ASCT.

Karin shared the following about her experience at Carroll, “The most valuable aspect of the Anthrozoology program was being able to foster and train a dog. I never would've gotten that opportunity anywhere else.”

Congratulations Karin! We look forward to seeing where your ANZ degree takes you in the future.

Karin and Eowyn were featured on a special telecast by KXLH TV back in May about Carroll's Anthrozoology program titled: Carroll College Prepares to Graduate First Anthrozoology Class

Stand Out Volunteer

Montana Campus Compact and the Governor’s Office of Community Service will recognize Carroll junior Christian Dresback as the “Volunteer of the Game” during tomorrow’s home football game vs. Montana Tech.

Christian, from Spokane, Wash., is known for his thoughtfulness and commitment to caring for others. On campus he is a peer minister, active with the Carroll College Christian Fellowship and an ASCC senator. Christian was also a volunteer at St. Peter’s Hospital Cancer Center. He went out of his way to look out for patients undergoing chemotherapy and uplifted their spirits during difficult circumstances.

Montana Campus Compact and the Governor’s Office of Community Service are recognizing student volunteers at one home game for each of Montana’s five Frontier Conference NAIA institutions this football season.

Thank you for your service to Carroll and the community of Helena, Christian!

Academic Home Run

Carroll College Softball was named a National Fastpitch Coaches' Association NAIA All-Academic Team and three Saints were named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes.

Freshmen Brittany Hogan, Jaylin Kenney and MacKenna Landis all received 2014-15 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors by achieving a 3.5 or higher on 4.0 scale.

The team honor is recognition for being one among 40 of the top academic teams in the country. The Saints posted a 3.20 team, good enough for No. 32 among NAIA teams.

Carroll is preparing for its second year as a program and first in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Saints were the lone Cascade team honored in the list.

National News

Carroll College cross country runner Lyle Pocha, a senior from Missoula, Mont., was named the NAIA National Cross Country Runner of the Week this week after his strong performance at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., last Saturday.

The honor is the first national runner of the week honor in Carroll history for both the men's and women's program.

“Muslim American, American Muslim”, Oct. 29 – Dec. 4, Carroll Art Gallery, St. Charles Hall, Carroll College

This exhibit is a collection of black and white photographs by Robert E. Gerhardt Jr.
of New York City. He states that his goal for this project is to try to understand and document the intersection between “Muslim” and “American,” since the latter part of this community’s identity is often forgotten. He began photographing for this project on the first night of Ramadan in 2010, and continues to make photographs through the present day. His hope is that this photo series can encourage a dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims in America that attempts to erase the boundaries that engender a sense of “them” and begin to foster a sense of “us.”

The gallery will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and is closed weekends and college holidays. For more information, visit the Visual Arts Current Gallery webpage or call 447-4302.

It is a memorable, interactive event that brings hunger and poverty issues to life. The place where you sit, and the meal that you eat, are determined by the luck of the draw—just as in real life some of us are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty.

Astronomy Lecture Series: Dr. Kelly Cline presents “Searching for Dark Energy,” Nov. 19, 7 p.m., 101/202 Simperman/Wiegand Amphitheatre, Carroll College

Dark energy is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of modern science. Current measurements tell us that stars, planets, gas, and dust only make up about 5% of the stuff in our universe. Dark energy accounts for 68% of the stuff in our universe, but no one knows exactly what it is. Dark energy was discovered in 1998, when it was found that our universe is expanding faster and faster. Observations of the afterglow of the big bang tell us that dark energy has been around for a very long time. Now, a laboratory experiment has reported some intriguing new results that may help us pin down what dark energy is at an atomic scale.  Join us for a discussion of the exciting new discoveries in the search for dark energy!

This event is free and the Helena community is invited to attend.
