Close to 300 Saints walked across the stage last weekend to receive their coveted diplomas at the 104th Carroll College commencement ceremonies.

After hearing the encouraging words of commencement speaker Mr. Mark Semmens and senior speaker Stuart Allyn, additional awards and honors were bestowed on students and faculty alike.

The Michael Murphy Award for Outstanding Collegiate Citizenship was presented to Raven Dryden, a communications studies major from Missoula, Montana. Dryden has been active on campus with the Chamber Choir, Campus Ministry and the student newspaper. She also participated in several service trips including traveling to Guatemala through the Campus Ministry Headlights program and to Argentina with Montana Dental Outreach through the Carroll Outreach Team. Dryden is known for her humbleness, deep faith, care for others, sense of peace and positive leadership.

The college’s Bishop Gilmore Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship, awarded to seniors who have attained the highest grade-point average after four years at Carroll, was awarded to nine graduates: Samuel Cotnoir of Frenchtown; Alaina Hull of Yakima, Washington; Shelby Kramer of Billings; Sandra Kroll of Helena; Joni McMahon of Helena; Susan Metzger of Billings; Carey Phelan of Lolo; Shannon Schober of Portland, Oregon; and Paige Williams of Lakewood, Colorado.

Two annual faculty awards were also conferred. The Outstanding Teaching Award recipient was nursing professor, Donna Greenwood. The Distinguished Scholar Award was awarded to Dr. Jennifer Lowell, professor of Health Sciences, for her academic accomplishments as well as her collaborative research with other faculty members.

The college also announced that two retiring faculty members, Dr. Ron Stottlemyer and Dr. Robert Swartout, have both been conferred the title of professor emeritus.

Congratulations to all our Saints!  You will be missed but we are excited to see where your Carroll education takes you!

Hosting History

The History Departments of Carroll College and The University of Montana jointly hosted the 2014 Phi Alpha Theta Northwest Regional Conference, which is the largest of the organization’s regional conferences. The conference was held April 10-12, 2014 at the Coeur d'Alene Resort in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Carroll took five senior history majors this year. The presenters were:

Eric Bond, Work which Was Done without Real Benefit: Recruitment for the German East Africa Campaign

Emily Dean, German Prisoners of War during WWII: The Civilian and Prisoner Experience in the Bitterroot Valley

Alex Gaiser, Sadam. Sadam. Sadam. Sadam.

Caitlin Rock, Unsung Heroes: an Expansion upon the Cold War Scholarship

James Thomas, Economic Importance of the Early Western United States

Additionally, three faculty members attended the conference, chaired and commented on panels, and chaired the program committee, including: Dr. DJ Cash, Dr. Jeanette Fregulia and Dr. Gillian Glaes.

What Does it All Mean?

Dr. Christopher Fuller, Carroll’s Dean of Mission Integration and Effectiveness, has been invited to participate in the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities Catholic mission assessment project being undertaken in conjunction with the Catholic Higher Education Research Consortium.

This 1 ½ - 2 year project focuses on providing guidance for Catholic higher education institutions on how to assess the Catholic identity on campus, and has two broad goals: to develop high quality measurement tools that meet the mission assessment and program development needs of a wide range of institutions; and to produce a best practices guide to help institutions develop useful approaches to the task of demonstrating how their unique institution advances its understanding of Catholic and congregational identity.

In offering him a position on the committee, it was noted that Dr. Fuller’s experiences as a faculty member, theologian and mission officer provide a valuable contribution to the work being undertaken. In addition, Carroll being a diocesan institution will be beneficial to the project as well.

Dr. Fuller has spent the past year coordinating and facilitating Catholic identity and mission initiatives with the Carroll College community. His participation in this project will most certainly help Carroll as we continue to evaluate what it means to be a Catholic college.

Prolific Poetry

Kevin Hadduck, Director of the Carroll Academic Resource Center, has published over 100 poems in nearly two-dozen, mostly peer-reviewed journals.

This spring, he added two more published pieces.

"Hunger Drives the Crescent Swallow's Wings" appeared in the Spring 2014 issue of Plainsongs, p. 37.

"Easter, Good Lord, Again" appeared in the Easter issue of The Cresset, March 2014, Vol. LXXVII, No. 4, p. 62.

The circle of life for our father, friend and mentor, Daniel John O’Neill IV (’77) has now been completed. He was brought into this world July 12, 1955, in South Bend, Indiana, through his parents Daniel John and Helen Marie (Petersen) O’Neill.

DJ was raised in Butte and was a student of St. Anne’s Elementary School and Butte Central High School. DJ continued his education at Carroll College where he also played football for the Saints and graduated with a degree in biology in 1977. Ever the adventurer, and accompanied by his good friends Dan Hitchcock and Tony DeJesus, DJ traveled at 55 mph across the United States and Canada in his yellow Volkswagen Beetle.

DJ learned the skills of dentistry at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California. Ever the optimist, DJ moved his bride back to Butte in 1982, at a time when the mines had closed and the local economic forecast was dismal. Here is where they would build a family of their own and impress into each of their five children a foundation of faith, friendship, courage and strength-and the belief in family unity and unconditional love and acceptance.

In his faith community, DJ went on many missionary medical missions over the years, each time taking a different child with him to expose them to the world around them. Along with all the jobs, DJ always created time to recreate – hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, camping and celebrating life with his many friends and family.
