Statistically Significant

It has been a fruitful year for grants at Carroll College. Most recently, in support of an initiative to integrate statistics across the curriculum, the W.M. Keck Foundation has awarded Carroll a $200,000 grant for Project InterStats. The project will provide interdisciplinary experiences for students, involve more students in undergraduate research, and provide funds for professional development for a wide cross-section of faculty.

The purpose of Project InterStats, an interdisciplinary collaboration of five faculty who teach statistics and twelve faculty from disciplines that regularly employ statistics, is to design and implement strategies that help students to more effectively relate their statistics coursework to research activity in their own fields of study.

“This grant is a testament to the remarkable efforts of our Carroll faculty in embracing innovative teaching methods, working collaboratively across disciplines and seeking opportunities to actively engage with our students,” said Dr. Tom Evans, president of Carroll College. “Through this gift, a very prestigious national foundation has recognized the excellence of our institution, our faculty and our programs.”

Congratulations to our math faculty, led by Dr. Kelly Cline, Dr. Dawn Gallinger, Dr. Eric Sullivan, and Dr. Ted Wendt for their vision and tenacity in bringing this project full circle from concept paper to final proposal.

This gift is in addition to four other academic grants that Carroll College has recently received: $100,000 from the William Randolph Hearst Foundations to further develop the humanities program at Carroll; $24,000 from the Apgar Foundation to support a yearlong series of events that will heighten awareness of constitutionalism within the community and help develop a sustainable and active Constitutional Studies Center; and two grants totaling nearly $100,000 from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust’s Research in the Natural Sciences program to help fund faculty/student research activity in the health sciences and biology departments at Carroll.

Music to Our Ears

Thanks to all that made this year's 12th Annual Symphony Under the Stars another wonderful success! The outdoor concert, held on a beautiful evening in July, delighted thousands with the sounds of Frank Sinatra starring vocalist Steve Lippia.

Carroll College is honored to provide this concert in conjunction with the Helena Symphony for our friends throughout Helena and beyond. Perhaps the greatest gift of the evening, besides the fellowship with our community, is the 17,200 pounds of food collected at the concert to benefit Helena Food Share.

We also thank those that participated in our new advanced blanket placement program in conjunction with the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts were very appreciative of the public's cooperation and of the donations received. The money will be used to purchase an AED to be on hand at local scouting events. Additional first aid equipment will also be purchased to help train scouts to effectively respond to life-threatening situations. Summer camp will also be more affordable for many boys, thanks to your generous support!

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

 Making the Grade

Carroll College Athletics placed all 15 athletic teams on the 2014-15 NAIA Scholar Teams list. Carroll tied for the fourth-most teams on the list but was one of just a few schools to land every team on the list.

For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes. Saints Volleyball led the way with a 3.52 GPA, followed by men's golf (3.50) and women's golf (3.49) and women's indoor track and field (3.47). Carroll football was third in the nation among football teams with a 3.23 GPA.

"This honor is representative of the commitment to excellence our coaches have in everything they do, and it starts with recruiting outstanding student-athletes who are willing to strive to match that commitment," Interim Athletic Director Kyle Baker said. "To have all 15 of our teams recognized, the same teams whose performance in competition led to Carroll College once again winning the Bandy All-Sports Award, is truly remarkable. This is an honor the entire Carroll family can be proud of and is a great testament to the hard work put in every day by our student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff."
